snag with Hawk800

2012-07-26 by dpaulo2

Hi Mike,
Got my Hawk800 in the kit a few days back and gave it to my partner's son who is much better at soldering that I am. So, firstly I believe the kit is installed properly and good.

I have had difficulty getting the Boot software in. If I install the 3 that are written in lowercase (ie eeprom0) then the synth gets stuck on 'FLASH'. However if I install the three uppercase files (ie EEPROM0) then I seem to get to a working synth, but when I go into the Diagnostic Tools to try function 6 to install a Patch Set the 6 key doesn't work and nothing happens, the other diagnostic functions do seem to work. I haven't really tried to to much else as this function would be a good starting point.

I have to say that stupidly in the earlier phase of trying to get the eeprom files in I also installed the 'Boot' file into Flash 3 which resulted in 'Good 4'. Have I messed things up by doing this??

Thanks Mike,
Daniel

You are doing just fine. I have not updated the documentation but function 6 in diagnostics mode (now called "Tools" mode) doesn't work anymore because I had to remove the default patches out of the boot ROM to make way for more software. So I would say that your kit is probably working just fine.

You do *not* need to update the boot code because you have the latest code already. You can check that by holding down the "Bank Hold" button while powering up the synth. Keep holding it down and you will see that "b 1.96" shows up briefly followed by other boot up check messages. If you don't get "b 1.96" I would be very surprised indeed because the fact that your synth boots up means it is most likely running the right boot version right now. But go ahead and check.

If you send the boot code to the HAWK then you just need to send the EEPROM0 back into your synth while in flash mode.

Use Tools mode function 8 to upload patch banks that are on the sourceforge site. I think you will find them to be very good starting patches for your own new ones.

Thanks for your reply, Mike. I get b 1.95 for the Boot Code, now I'll try and get some patches in.

Did you install just the HAWK or have you installed both HAWK and AtomaHawk?

I should add that I have had the Moog Slayer and FM800 mods added to the synth previously...

Mike,
To be more specific, there is a kind of white noise pulse which is the only sound, which comes in and out every couple of seconds. Sometimes in the far background the oscillators are just audible. I can tweak the two filter pots to get squealing resonance.
The synth has also got an Audio In added, and inside is a little PCB for the extra mods.
???

It's a MK1 poly? The white noise is probably the Chorus swishing away in the background.

Have you successfully uploaded the latest software (v2.53) into the HAWK?
Does the HAWK power up showing flashing "88 88 88" then "HA-800" then 11 H?
Does the HAWK send out MIDI note on/off data when you press keys?
Have you set the device type (global parameter 34) to Poly MK1, EX-800 or MK2?
Have you uploaded any patch banks (get them from the HAWK800 sourceforge files section)?

Mike

Dan, go ahead and load up all 4 patch banks.

The same exact thing happened to me also with my recent install, I too only loaded one bank and it did that chop noise crud to me.. after I loaded up all for banks with info, the noise went away.

All I can figure is all the patch banks need their parameters set to normal values.. a raw build will initially have random values in all four of the banks (its code is set to do that.. Mike can explain further why, but it's in the documentation) and thats evidently where the noise comes from.. once the values in ALL the banks are set within proper values, it goes away.

I am not too sure about the validity of what you're saying. You only need to upload one back and then select that bank. The HAWK couldn't care less what's in the other banks until those banks are selected.

But hey, I've been wrong too many times to say outright "no this is not true". Let's see if uploading four banks helps.

Re: Dan's White Noise...

Thanks to all your replies, I have a fantastic working synth now! I had previously put in the file called "Mike's FM800 Patch Set". Maybe it was the wrong file because as soon as I put in "Bank 1" it worked, so now have put all 4 banks in.
Hope to be able to offer something back in due course.....

Re: Dan's White Noise...

I'm not too sure either, all I know is I loaded one bank, and could have sworn THAT bank was selected.. but still had the noisy chop sound I had prior to loading a patch bank in...
After loading the other three banks, it quit and began to behave properly.
It could have been that the bank I loaded and the bank the board was pointing to were not the same.. that it was pointing to an empty bank, thus chaotic noise.

Seems Dan simply had the wrong patch bank flashed in.. that FM800 bank is meant for the Atomohawk fitted HAWK isnt it?

Either way, glad to hear he got it worked out.
