[korgpolyex] Help! My Poly 800 acts strange and I don't know what's wrong with it.

2011-06-23 by vlad stoica

My Poly 800 acts strange and I don't know what's wrong with it.

It was fine yesterday but after cleaning my desk today, it just sounds as if the signal would be influenced only by Noise and VCF.. it makes a very slow attack noisy vcf sound with all the patches.. they differ somewhat and playing with the parameters from Noise and VCF affects the sounds it makes to some extent.

If anyone has come across this behavior please tell me what is wrong with my Poly 800.
I am devastated by this.

This sounds exactly like the battery died and you lost all the patches. Try loading them again and see if that fixes it.

Don't worry it's just the internal battery, but the patches you had in the memory
are gone, if you don't have a backup you've lost your patches... I've put a socket
on my poly so I can use a regular CR 3025 battery, it can't be easier...

Thanks Donald and Bill for your fast help !

I suspected that the internal battery might be at fault here but there was no way for me to know for sure.
I'm glad the synth is OK. :)
I am now looking for a tutorial in changing the internal battery of the Poly.
If you guys have a good link to one it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you again!
Vlad

Found one here:

http://analog.no/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=50&Itemid=49

Anyways just google it "poly 800 battery mod" and you will find a lot of info...

As I own the Poly 800 II it was an easier mod but I believe that in your case the
best choice is just swap the external batteries, thouse for operating it without
a power adaptor, they keep the memory alive too, I wouldn't mess around with
the circuit that much just to put an internal battery, in my case it was just take
out the original battery and solder a socket in the same place.

Offtopic: For thouse of you wondering how to make the VCF CV IN mod it's the
same pin in VR2 where the moog slayer mod take place, just put a diode, for
example an 1N4148 between the positive CV and VR2, ground the negative CV,
keep the voltages between -5 and +5 V and you are good to go. Using Expert
Sleepers Silent Way I get a ditional LFOs in sync and with multiple waveforms
as modulation sources for the VCF, including S&H.

this is exactly what happens when the old battery dies:
some weird patch with noise etc, on all the presets.
so:
it is very easy:
get a battery clip from a PC motherboard, or same type.
(carefully) unsolder the existing dead battery (it was
soldered in in mine)

then connect in its place the new battery clip.
fit a new battery and you're good to go. if it
dies again, next time you'll just have to clip
a new battery in.
be careful not to overheat anything, and you
should be ok.

You can also have patch parameters overwritten with random values if
the Poly-800 crashes because of a MIDI overrun.

If you still need help, you can check out my video on battery replacement for synths....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZEQJZy00NY

Always use flux and clean area with isopropyl alcohol after the job is done...

J.
