this is exactly what happens when the old battery dies:
some weird patch with noise etc, on all the presets.
so:
it is very easy: 
get a battery clip from a PC motherboard, or same type.
(carefully) unsolder the existing dead battery (it was 
soldered in in mine)

then connect in its place the new battery clip. 
fit a new battery and you're good to go. if it 
dies again, next time you'll just have to clip 
a new battery in.
be careful not to overheat anything, and you 
should be ok.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
