Two kits?

Two kits?

2008-02-25 by korgpolyex800

If I hold off and redo the printed circuit board design to support the
other mod's it's going to push back the release of the kit by a couple
of months. It will also make the kit much more complicated for some
people.

so I am thinking about releasing two separate kits.

The first kit is the memory and software upgrade. While the second kit
will do 12/24 db filter switch, FM-800, Moog Slayer and possibly noise
into FM-800 mods all controlled by the software/memory upgrade.

This will allow me to get the memory and software upgrade kit out
within a week or two and allow me to continue work on the new board
that would support the hardware mods. Plus, to keep the noise level
down, it is going to better to locate the chips for the hardware mod
close to the filter itself. So a separate board is probably better anyway.

I am guessing that the second kit would cost under $50 bucks while the
memory and software upgrade kit is going to be close to $100.

What does everyone think about that?

Mike.

somewhat off topic, but what will be the resolution of the software
control over the hardware mods? 6 or 7 bit?

6 or 7 bits

2008-02-26 by patrioticduo

Great question because the answer is somewhere between 6 and 7 bits - lol.

But seriously, the digital pot's are either 100 or 128 bit resolution.
Can't remember exactly, I'll check the doc's tonight.

The code is going to be interesting because the wipers are clocked up
and down and there's no way to read their positions. So the position
has to be stored by the CPU in memory and then the pot's have to be
clocked up and down according to the difference between existing set
position and the new required position. These little 8 pin chips are
really designed for car radio volume controls or similar applications.

The challenge will be to make sure that the code keeps the pot's very
responsive while also not slowing down things when a big pot sweep
change occurs. So let's say we send a MIDI controller that sweeps from
0 to 99 in one message then we'll have to slow the sweep down a bit
perhaps only clocking up 10 pot positions in a single interrupt cycle.
So ten interrupts will be required to get the pot to it's final end
position.

That should be quite OK because the joystick A/D conversion code works
in the same way where it takes 16 hardware interrupts to do a full
conversion of both the X and Y axis. In this configuration, I still
can't "hear" any slowness in the MG or bend joystick responsiveness.

So, the second kit is a standalone thing, or an add-on to the first? Either way, I'm cool with it,
for sure. Wow, I'm really looking forward to this!

Re: Two kits?

The first kit is the memory/software upgrade. It makes your Poly 800
or EX 800 into the Hawk 800. This gives you all of the MIDI and
portamento etc.

The second kit is an add on to the first kit. It makes your Hawk 800
into the aTomahawk 800. This will put the FM and Moog Slayer mods
under parameter/EG/MG and MIDI control. You can't use this kit without
installing the memory/software upgrade first.

And while we're on topic, I really think we should find out who Atom
really is so that a) we can give him proper attribution for his
contribution and b) we can do an intervention and cure him of his
thought reformed political template.

LOL.

Ordered parts for 10 kits...

2008-02-26 by korgpolyex800

I just ordered enough parts for 10 kits.

Am now looking into this whole eBay seller thing.

Have three (3) PCB's on hand. Will order another 10 within a week or two.

So the kit is coming soon!

Is there a list we can sign up to for position in getting the kits yet?

No, I don't have a list, I was just going to start taking orders on ebay.

But, thinking about it, there might be a bit of a rush on orders
initially. So in order to make sure that I order the right number of
PCB's to begin with, I am opening a poll where people can vote with
how many kits they are going to order AS SOON AS THE KIT BECOMES
AVAILABLE.

That should give me a good indication of how many kits I should get
ready right from the start.

that's cool, but it shouldn't stop you from putting a few kits on
evil-bay. not everyone is on this list, and that should be a good
opportunity to let the unwashed masses help subsidize those of us on the
list ;)

i just voted "none" but i'll be waiting for both kits to be available, so
i can save on shipping... now that i'm on the other side of the planet in
NZ, having successfully escaped the decay of the US into totalitarian
fascism, and financial collapse ;)

heh, going to New Zealand to escape financial collapse, now that's
ironic, considering that entire country declared bankrupcy a few years
back, becoming the poster-child for 1st-world financial collapse. (no
personal offense intended to anyone except perhaps accountants who
worked for the New Zealand govt.) Yeah I know this is off-topic, but I
thought it was amusing and I never claimed to have a very good sense of

Sorry I wasn't here when you discussed the finer details of this
upgrade. To save me the trouble of searching the archives could you
repeat the description of what exactly the Hawk upgrade will do? As
in, what all the 'MIDI stuff' refers to specifically? I assume it
will give my Poly 800 the functionality of the EX 800, and I
understand the extra functions the EX/MK2 rom provides, but what are
the additional functions provided by the Hawk upgrade? Also is the
Hawk memory backed up with its own battery for those of us without
battery-backed up Poly 800s? Thanks!

So you mean the Tomahawk gives you midi (CC?) control over the FM and
Moog slayer mods?

The second kit seems pretty expensive, more than I paid for the Poly
800 itself. Although I'd love to get my hands on the 12/24 filter, I
think I will probably order the Hawk kit only and install the usual
FM & Moog Slayer hacks myself.

I knew it had to be you who voted for two straight away.

I must say, the depth of the sounds with two running in cascade mode
is very, very cool. I think you'll be very happy with the results.

Definitely off topic...

2008-02-28 by korgpolyex800

You know Atom,

Now that you've mentioned your particular brand of self delusional
group think in an email directly, and since I have direct experience
with the far east, what me being a new Australian American Citizen and
having spent some months on business in New Zealand too, having
traveled through Asia on business extensively and worked for 25 odd
years for those evil, nasty American corporations, let me ask you just
one question.

While in the US, did you ever write or phone your congressman?

The reason I ask is because absolutely every single person that I've
spoken to that has held similar sentiments as you hold has NEVER
called or written their congressman. It's all whining, complaining and
pontificating repeating the current liberal talking points but NEVER
active involvement in the political process. Someone once said,
Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Good luck in New Zealand, where they have NO AIR FORCE! They'll be
relying on the great United States of America to rescue them some day
- AGAIN. And as we have always done, Australia will stand up beside
the US and fight for your freedoms to.

And for those who don't know, I am mourning the loss of my greatest
intellectual icon and role model, William F Buckley Jr. who passed on
yesterday. Goodbye and God speed dear friend. You will be missed by a
multitude.

And God save the Western World,

Mike.

Full list of features

2008-02-28 by korgpolyex800

Hi Zoinky,

You can see the full list of features already in the software in the
kit here: http://patrioticduo.tripod.com/korgpoly800ex800mkiii/id15.html

And there will be more features added over the coming years. And to
upgrade your machine you just download the sysex files from my web
site and send them to the Poly.

Yes, there is a separate battery on the new board. You don't need the
old battery at all.

See the assembled board here:

http://patrioticduo.tripod.com/korgpoly800ex800mkiii/id16.html

Yes, the second kit will put the Moog Slayer, FM-800 and 12/24 filter
switch under parameter and MIDI CC control. I haven't worked out what
the price will be for it because I've not actually built it yet. But
it will definitely be less than $50 maybe even $30. I just haven't
done the bill of materials or the math yet.

Mike.

Thanks Mike! Ok, that sounds pretty good, I had thought you said the
Hawk mod would be $50, and the Tomahawk would be $150, meaning to get a
Tomahawk you'd need to spend $200, but perhaps you were putting the
Tomahawk price together with the Hawk price in your previous post

Well since we're already off topic!...

I think that writing your congressman or other elected-official is a
waste of time, unless you're writing a letter expousing a position your
recipient already agrees with, in which case he or she may send copies
of the letter to the media as means to demonstrate his or her support
among the voters. Congressmen and other elected officials do not sit
around in their offices wondering what position they should support,
just waiting for someone to write them a letter telling them what to
do. They come to politics heavy with ideology and they work in
politics for the purpose of advancing that ideology. If it's really
important to you to have some influence in govt, you'd be far more
influential getting a position as a paid advisor to a politician than
you would writing a jillion letters. Or run in an election yourself,
and take the piss out of your competition in debates. Even becoming a
journalist, who can slant and bias articles the way you want, would be
more effective than sending a letter to a politician to be filed in the
circular filing cabinet.

Democracy is probably the best system available, but that does not mean
it's a great system. By its very nature it must pander to the lowest
common denominator (watching political tv commercials around election
time in democratic countries demonstrates that much), and I think that
recognizing that is of chief importance to those who seek to protect
and bolster democracy. Holding it up as a gold standard that can do no
wrong and must be forced upon every non-democractic population in the
world in order to save them from dictatorial boogeymen only serves to
weaken democracy's usefulness and popularity. Don't get me wrong, I
supported both of the recent middle-east wars, until they were won and
became occupations with bringing wonderous democracy to the defeated
used as an excuse to keep pushing them around ad infinitum...

Sorry, I realize upon re-reading my post that my above-quoted statement
was not a reasonable comparison. I should have compared whether
writing a letter to a politician would be more or less effective than
writing a letter to anyone else. So, I think that writing a letter to
the editor of a newspaper is more effective than writing a letter to a
politcian. That's because, if a letter to the editor of a newspaper
gets published in a newspaper, the politcian will still probably read
it, as will most other politcians, and a lot of voters. The politician
who you wanted to get the message will be compelled to consider the
message because he knows that it may be influencing a large amount of
voters. Conversely, if the letter had only been sent to the
politician, the politician can rest assured that if he crumples it up
and throw it in the garbage, the issue ends there because nobody
besides the letter writer and the recipient know the letter existed and
are aware of its content. But if the letter is widely read by the
public, the politician may be forced to respond to it even if he or she
would rather not even address the issue.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear on that.

For the record:

The Hawk-800 will be just shy of $100.

The aTomaHawk will be somewhere under $50.

2008-02-29 by Michael Hawkins

Absolutely Al,

I am very conscious of the fact that people often buy the Poly 800 because they are cash strapped in the first place. One of the reasons that it's been so much fun to put all of this new ability into the Poly 800 is that it will make an incredibly cheap keyboard capable of things only much more expensive old synthesizers can do. But I've spent over a year disassembling the software and then rewriting it with all of this new stuff. So the price is a bit of a trade off between considerations. On the one hand you have musicians on low budgets while on the other hand you have my wife and children!

Mike.

Its rare that I put in my two cents....
While my own poliitical views are definitely aligned with one of you, in this context, it doesn't really matter which one.
This forum is for the exchange of ideas about our mutual passion, that wonderful little beast that has wormed its way into all of our hearts, the poly800.
As a longtime devotee to hardware hacking and mods in general, I have the greatest respect for both of you and your contributions to this forum. Keep up the good work and leave politics out of it.

you said "Good luck in New Zealand, where they have NO AIR FORCE!" you
didn't say anything about combat capability. what you said was wrong,
nothing tricky about that.

FTMP, the military in NZ is a defensive force, not an offensive force.
when was the last time NZ invaded another country?

the US also armed iran (using funds from CIA drugs deals in nicaragua);
armed iraq (when iran was evil, this includes the chemical weapons that
saddam used to gas his own kurdish population); i could go on... the US
will arm anyone with cash, and in some cases anyone without.

or NZ, where hospital emergencies are covered and preventative care is
well subsidized. you have to admit, it's pretty sad that the "heroes" of

cuba!

what ever made you think i don't enjoy capitalism? i think that, like
socialism, it would be interesting to try it on a large scale. if you
believe that either of those economic theories have ever been implemented
on a large scale, then you're really a fool. several examples of recent
history *claim* to have been one or the other (while proclaiming the

see how they're not operating as advertised.

you think islam has a monopoly on radical fundamentalism? i don't recall
any cases of muslims bombing womens' health centers. add to your list of
movies "jesus camp". there are people in the US who think homosexuals
should be stoned to death, and they're not muslims.

so what are you gonna do with the money you raise from the kits? stock up
on canned food and ammunition, so your basement is well stocked and ready
for hillary to take away your HMO? and ready for the UN to invade the US
with black helicopters? you're further off the deep and than i am. check

Absolutely,

they are passionate about.

This forum is for those passionate about the Poly 800.

And as a moderator, I apologize for having to remove my own posts!
