Sorry, I realize upon re-reading my post that my above-quoted statement
was not a reasonable comparison. I should have compared whether
writing a letter to a politician would be more or less effective than
writing a letter to anyone else. So, I think that writing a letter to
the editor of a newspaper is more effective than writing a letter to a
politcian. That's because, if a letter to the editor of a newspaper
gets published in a newspaper, the politcian will still probably read
it, as will most other politcians, and a lot of voters. The politician
who you wanted to get the message will be compelled to consider the
message because he knows that it may be influencing a large amount of
voters. Conversely, if the letter had only been sent to the
politician, the politician can rest assured that if he crumples it up
and throw it in the garbage, the issue ends there because nobody
besides the letter writer and the recipient know the letter existed and
are aware of its content. But if the letter is widely read by the
public, the politician may be forced to respond to it even if he or she
would rather not even address the issue.
