Moog Slayer and FM updates

Moog Slayer and FM updates

2006-04-08 by Atom Smasher

http://synthmod.net/korg/moog_slayer/

  1) i updated the wiring diagram from an ASCII to a JPG.

  2) the modification is now published under a "Picture, Sample, Lunch-Ware
License": If you perform this modification send me an email with pictures,
samples and your location. If I visit where you live or you visit where I
live (currently Asheville NC) you have to take me to lunch.

i think i have the FM mod figured out. i'm hoping to document it (with
pictures) tonight. i haven't yet come up with a name for it, so ideas are
welcome. i also don't have a sound-card installed so all of you bastards
who install that mod better send me some fscking samples!

jure expressed the most interest in this, so i sent him details off-list.
after i know that the mod works on more than just my own EX-800 i'll make
the mod publicly available.

so... my EX-800 know has 3 extra knobs on the front: FM, Cutoff &
Resonance.

HOT DAMN!!! the FM knob gives it a whole new world of expression and
sounds. it didn't take long before i was getting some DX/TX kinds of harsh
sounds out of it (especially with the moog-slayer resonance turned up).
it's absolutely sick! turned all the way down, it sounds just like it did
before the mod. depending on the patch and how far up the knob is turned,
it can range from subtle to sickening to overwhelming.

i was testing it out with headphones and several times buckaroo bonzai
(the dog) woke up and gave me very concerned looks.

i still haven't decided on a name for the mod... the "DX Slayer"? the
"FM-800"? send me your ideas and you may get mentioned when i publish the
mod.

well i've tried it - it's a really easy mod - and it works very nicely!

you basically get an extra knob that determines the level of filter
modulation from one of the DCOs. that gives us nice additional timbres
and can make the poly800 even more dirty/raspy sounding.
taking this further, it can be combined nicely with the moogslayer! if
the resonance is set high enough for self-oscillation and filter
tracking set to full, you can play with the new setting to get all
kinds of wacky sounds!

...not to mention that pressing a few keys at once with both the
resonance and the new FM depth setting maxed unleashes a true sonic
mayhem!

thanks alot Atom! and post it soon!

Awesome...I think we're all waiting with bated breath. =)

======================

good news and bad news...

the mod is (almost?) ready for public consumption... jure brought some
things to my attention, concerning the sonic possibilities, that i hadn't
tested out. in order to make sure that the mod kicks as much ass as
possible, i'm waiting to release it until after me and/or jure have a
chance to test a few things.

it will be worth waiting for! you might want to label the knob "kick ass"
and number it 0-11.

for now, think of the modification as nearly complete, but still going
through final QA testing ;)

it should be released VERY SOON.

big thanks to jure for testing it out and giving me great feedback (no pun
intended).

We'll wait, but what should we buy before, to be able to do the mod as
soon as possible? ;)
