Even your mockup would intrude on the keypad. For a external cover to work, it would have to be narrower and more like a box.
But if we put it over the decal panel then we could just extend the existing profile of the sloped panel. To make it worthwhile, we could then add knobs and switches to the panel since we would be obscuring the parameter decals anyway.
Question: If we did do such a thing, what controls would everyone want in the way of knobs and switches. Keep it to a minimum but enough to make it worthwhile.
Keep in mind that all this hardware has to cost money and the LCD, knobs and switches only works with Poly's that have HAWK installed.

That's what I thought, too, why not making some kind of LCD holder that you'd put in place of the original display cover ?
Look at the quick mock-up attached as an idea...2013/4/26 Manu <mail@...>
What about putting it there, but over the case, instead of inside? :-)

I had a look at trying to fit a 2x16 LCD where the existing seven segment displays go.
Unfortunately, the display I have (which is fairly typical of these 2x16 types) won't fit. The supports that would keep the keypad in place would have to be removed and the slope of the back of the case itself impinge into the area where the LCD display PCB would have to go.
I don't see any way to put an LCD display into the Poly-800 in that location or anywhere else unfortunately.
