Yes, the switch is set to "off."  I've actually tried it both ways, to no effect.  The data goes out, but doesn't "take" on the machine.  After further experimenting, I am able to dump a patch from the synth into Midiquest, modify the parameters in real time, then "write" the new values into the machine, and they stay changed after turning off.  So I guess the protect switch operates correctly.  I just can't get a patch uploaded to overwrite an existing patch -- except accidentally, that one time.
