You use a special hard rubber ended mallet in one hand and a regular one in
the other. You strike the note regularly with the regular mallet and hold
down the sustain pedal. You then press down hard on the note with the rubber
mallet near the bottom of the bar where the string runs through the note.
And while the note is sustaining you move the rubbert mallet slowly up the
length of the note to create the bent effect. It works better lower on the
instrument because then notes ar physically larger and you have more
distance to move the pressed in mallet up. In regular playing situations of
course you can do it with two of the same regular mallets. It's not as
predominant an effect though, although more practical if it is in the middle
of a passage of notes.

Glad to be able to act as a sleep inducer.

It'd probably be easier to just load a sample of it into EXS (bringing
things back on topic) and use your midi mod wheel. But it's not nearly as
much fun.

Thanks for this enlightening info Eli.
Having listened and analysed best I could Mainieri's playing, I had
come to the conclusion that he used one of those old digital delays
with a pedal connected to the speed pot(Roland made those). I did
experiment with those and got the same results. Check out the Blue
Montreux albums, perhaps that is what is happening on those.

Hi Paul,

I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm not that familiar with Mike Manieri's
playing. I've heard some of the Steps Ahead stuff in passing, but that's
about it. He very well could be using some delay effects. I was describing
the traditional method of "bending" a note on vibes. I've been in the mood
to buy some new CDs lately. I'll look for these Blue Montreux albums you
mention. Thanks.

Re: Eli's vibes

Hi Eli,

Is it Me or....?

I downloaded your vibe and messed with it. It has a nice attack and
seems definitely musical enough. However, it sounds almost as if
there is a flute-like sound layered in with the vibe, making it sound
a wee bit distorted. Is it in there or are my speakers getting ready
to blow?

OK, thanks Eli

Hi Bob,

I think it's something on your system. They are pure samples of a Musser M55
vibraphone (with vibrato on). There has been nothing added to or layered
with them. Is it possible your gain staging is off somewhere and it is
clipping either internally in Logic or externally on outboard gear?
