Can anyone recommend a good piano sample CD with a sound suitable for jazz? How about the one in the ProSamples range? (I like the look of it because it is cheap!!!). Many Thanks, Gordon

(unless in a decent studio with - gasp - a REAL piano :) andy

To add to this question, what is the best piano available for under $300 in a small package, whether hardware or software? I've heard good things about Nanopiano, but not in a detailed sense. My favorite piano sound is a real 12-foot Yamaha Grand--the best I've ever heard. I'd love to not have to worry about it, but the truth is I really feel I need to be recording piano parts. Tracking the real thing in an expensive studio is not an option. Moreover, I really need it in MIDI format. -Jer

Wizoo and Steinberg just came out with a VST plug in called The Grand. I heard some on line demos and it sounds very good and the specs look real good. I am very curious about it and have it on my list to get some time. Check that out: http://www.steinberg.net/products/ae/plugins/thegrand/index.phtml?sid=04633336 >From: <HELP@...> >Reply-To: exs-users@yahoogroups.com >To: <exs-users@yahoogroups.com> >Subject: Re: [exs] Piano Sample >Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 09:46:30 -0500 > >To add to this question, what is the best piano available for under $300 in >a small package, whether hardware or software? Well going over your budget by a lil bit you could try finding a second hand JV1010. It has the Session board built in, which is quite good. Failing that then I have seen ALesis QSR's going quite cheap over here (London)... around £250-£300 second hand. A couple of Piano patches are quite useable. Thank you, Paul. This is exactly what I had in mind! It looks very appealing.

Oh my God! The demo is astounding! I would have thought it was the real deal had I not been told in advance. It's almost to perfect sounding to be real. That's good enough for me. It sounds like someone spent weeks getting the mics just right, then found the perfect mix engineer--two things that are hard to come by in and of themselves, let alone a great sounding piano. I can't wait to get my hands on this!

This is one of the better piano samples I have heard, agreed, but I would never be in doubt that this is actually a sample and not a genuine Yamaha grand. The problem is, as far as I can see, that a velocity curve of only 128 steps (counting from zero), and only measured on the key's speed is far from adequate to cover the whole range of sounds an acoustic piano can produce. I could play five different keystrokes that would all come out at a velocity level of 127, but would still sound very differently on an acoustic piano. The only thing that still sounds like an acoustic piano to me is actually an acoustic piano, so I guess what I have to do is learn to record this as well as I can, and still keep practising them scales, to continue being a good pianist for my recordings. Technology can do a lot, but to my opinion it cannot yet reproduce a piano satisfyingly. regards monsdrum

I suppose you are right; however, I think it will work for my recordings. I believe that the demo is over-produced anyway and could account for some of the lack of soul in the recording. Of course, there is no replacement for the real thing, but this is the most tolerable fake piano I have ever heard. The real test will be playing it myself. But I'm often surprised how comfortable I feel in a piano program that has realistic action, and not many programs can give me this feeling. "The Grand" probably does it best.

Hi all, I tried to play the demo, but it came out as digital noise. I'm using a Mac. Anyone having the same problems?
