Stereo drums in a multiple sample load drum kit?

If I have two samples with the extension.L and .R is there an easy way to get the EXS to create a stereo drum sound on one key zone. Also if I load one sample file that is stereo (is this referred to as interleaved) then the EXS mono's it in the multiple load method. Or is the answer to manually create two layers on one key zone and pan them hard left and right? Peace.
