In general, I would look at the new libraries. Sampling has come a
*long* way in the past 4-5 years - it's really become a whole new
medium. Here's a list:
Vienna Symphony Library www.vsl.co.at
East West Quantum Leap Symphony Orchestra www.soundsonline.com
The above two are the best complete libs, and both are amazing in
different ways; if you can afford both (or a light version of one),
do it, because they really complement each other. VSL starts at $1k
and goes up to $5k for the full version, EWQLSO starts at about $300
and goes up to just under $3k.
But if you're in the <$300 range, also look at Garritan Personal
Orchestra www.Garritan.com. It's a great deal, and he did an
excellent job.
Sections to check out:
Sonic Implants Symphonic Strings www.sonicimplants.com
Garritan Orchestral Strings www.garritan.com
(Sonic and Garritan have light versions and $1000 versions)
Kirk Hunter strings - a new lib I haven't heard www.truespec.com
SAM Horns/Trumpets/Trombones www.projectsam.com. Very reasonably
priced, all very good stuff.
There are several percussion libs as well, but I haven't used them:
Christian Lane, London Orchestral Percussion.
Apologies in advance if I've left anything out.
