Hi Shane,

I know this isn't directly about the CDs you were asking about, but I was at a client's place a few days ago doing some work for her and she had a CD called Brass Super Section in Akai format. She has a Gigiastudio setup and had it in there. But I converted it into her EXS 24 through the vanilla Emagic conversion (in Logic 5.2) to try it out. Some of the sounds are very nice, some are pretty good and some are really nothing I would want to use (like any sample CD I guess).

The section and solo single shot multisamples were pretty good on each of the saxes, trumpets, and trombones. The short shots (also with falls which were very nice) were all very good. The legato multisamples were mixed. Some of the saxes were nice. The trombones and trumpets were pretty good. And there were some very nice muted trumpet mustisamples too, both legato and stacatto. It's not a "modern" CD rom, in that the samples aren't particularly big. It's from that generation of CDs designed for 32 meg samplers. But they're still for the most part very musical and fun to play on.

But what realy bugged me was the conversion. There was a lot of latency in triggering many of the samples. When I went into the sample editor I of course saw silence at the beginning of the files which was the cause. So it seems it didn't convert the sample start points very well. Yes you could go in and manually fix the start points of the problem multisamples, but it's a lot of work.

Same thing at the ends of the samples. Some had bad clicks and noise at the end. A quick look in the sample editor revealed lots of empty space at the end. So it was easily remedied by moving the end anchor in, but it's a drag (pun intended).

I'm going back to her place tomorrow night to do some work and will check it out in her Giga setup to see if Giga converted it any better. I'm curious.

Aside from the sample start/end problems, I'd pick up this CD Rom if I could get it at a good price. Seeing as how it's a "last generation" type of rom, maybe the price isn't too high for it; I don't know.
