I think all of the concerns expressed about the EXS are all very valid. The alternative, however, is that the EXS could have been substantially delayed in its already-painfully-late release. I, for one, am glad it's here. It is very, very good at importing huge dumps of percussion samples from AIFF, making audio CDs a completely viable source for sound libraries. Here is an example of how to do this process from start to finish. Extract the audio from a CD using the Toast Audio Extractor. Then open in Peak. Then split by threshold into regions. Export the regions to AIFF. Open EXS and go to the Map editor. Go to the Zones menu. Then select Load Multiple Samples. Then select the Chromatic import method. This will dump each sample into a Zone (layer) of the instrument from C1 on up, automatically setting the proper key pitch for each sample (one of my favorite features of this sampler along with the zero latency). Save the instrument. You are done. This process is amazing in and of itself. The Unity DS-1 can also do this, but it has a terrible latency problem and unreliable note-off accuracy (you really notice this flaw when using percussion sounds). I should add that I'm referring to the Unity with Rewire in effect (a requirement in my opinion). Overall, the process of doing this in the EXS is much faster anyway. I am very pleased at this capability, but sympathize with concerns about conversion. I am really looking forward to such advancements. Hope this helps a few folks.
