Ok, let me elaborate. To use Unity with VST effects you must use ReWire, a
technology which leaves much to be desired. To give you an example, before I
started using the EXS, I tried the Unity on a few tracks. I kid you not when
I say I had a latency of a 16th note (ouch, it hurts to remember). Not only
that, but the timing was unpredictable and notes did not release at their
instructed duration. In fact, they seemed to release with a mind of their
own. You can use Unity without rewire, but what's the point? Get an EXS my
friend! Having an additional piece of software (hogging more RAM) in
addition to missing the boat to my VST world (which is heaven) is not my
idea of a good time. The EXS pros (vs cons), you ask? They are vast when
compared to the Unity. The only thing Unity is good for is splitting up
various audio samples automatically into separate samples (like samples of
an audio sample CD), but Peak blows Unity away in this function and Peak
supports VST in its latest incarnation, and does a ton of other useful
stuff. If you buy the Unity, you may live to regret it. I have a very
successful friend (musically speaking) that feels the same way as I do. He's
the only other person I know personally with Unity experience, and I can't
shut him up when he talks about what a rip-off the program is. This isn't a
Bitheadz bashing session, and maybe Unity was an interesting novelty when it
first came out, but the novelty is wearing off--no it's rusting! Take my
advice: go for the good stuff (the EXS). Sorry, Bitheadz (I want my money
back--the Unity and the DS-1) :(   Creative people, Bitheadz. They built a
nice instrument interface. Too bad they never made the Unity a VST
instrument.
