EMXP on Mac?

EMXP on Mac?

2012-05-15 by James Ulibarri

Has anyone tried running EMXP on a Mac running boot camp or dual boot
Windows? I have a vintage SE/30 and Performa 200 Macs, and I wanted
to gut one and install a Mac Mini and LCD screen in there like you may
or may not have seen on the internet. And run EMXP, and Awave on the
modified unit. And then keep the other one running Sound Designer,
Turbo Synth, and Alchemy. They would just sit next to each other,
double fisted. But I need to know if a Mac Mini has the cabilitly to
run Windows and/or Boot camp and will successfully run EMXP? If not,
then I need to put in a small Windows mac mini clone and run regular
old XP or Win 7 to run EMXP and Awave since we know that works fine.
Someone from the Prophet 2000 forum posted a 2000/200 editor that he
wrote that runs on Windows. So all the more need/want here.

Should work on the software level. Having built a few boot camp systems at work I can tell you the only issues will be hardware related. That is if you try to use it with an Emuser it probably won't work. But for the software functionality it should work.
Do you have a built Emuser? If so let me know if it works for you once boot camp is a go

The software worked fine for me on a bootcamp partition but forget burning any disks.

I do have an Emuser.   It's so awesome.   I think you're right, there may be a driver conflict for the Emuser. Good catch.  If that's the case I might just use a windows mac mini clone.  Probably much cheaper too.  I'm not a windows hater so it's not a big deal for me.  EMXP will look cool on a little Mac SE/30.

Very cool concept I'd love to see some pix of that and the parts involved.
Maybe you could doc the parts and procedure for us;)

Nigel,  so do you have an Emuser?  And you said EMXP worked for you running Boot Camp right.  If so, did you use the standard LUFA USBtoSerial driver?

Re: EMXP on Mac?

I would like to know that too ;)
Unfortunately I don't have a Mac to test EMXP and the EmuSer on.

A few days ago I had an e-mail conversation with someone who tried to use the EmuSer on a MacBook pro with Bootcamp + Windows 7. He said the communication with the Emulator-II was very unstable (or even not working) but that it worked much better with the Emax - which is kind of strange because both use high speed synchronous communication, although the protocol is different.
When he uses the same EmuSer on a native Win XP PC, it works fine with both Emulator-II and Emax.

Would the problem be caused by (USB port ?) hardware used by Apple, or by the Windows USB port driver that is being used on Mac ?

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EMXP on Mac?

2012-05-15 by James Ulibarri

I have not been able to get the Emuser to work with an Emax 1 keyboard on Windows 7.  Which works great with my EII.  I sold that that Emax, and will have to try it again on the next one I pick up.  So it seems there are some differences?

I did gut the Performa 200 last night.  It9;s very easy to open and held together with 4 Torx bolts. I prefer a Mac Mini in the SE/30 shell before a Windows machine. But I also want reliability for EMXP.   Once the boards and old Samsung CRT monitor was out...  you can see that the mod is very doable.  I think a day or two's worth of work and it could be done.  You'll need some metal flexible brackets for the braces, and a dremel saw, and some ingenuity.  But it's not gonna be that hard.  I have the monitor sorted and will order it in a couple weeks.  Now I need to figure what system to get.  So anyone regarding Macs and EMXP info would be appreciated.

Re: [emulatorII-list] Re: EMXP on Mac?

2012-05-15 by James Ulibarri

A little more research.  The new Mac Mini's do not have a CD/DVD rom drive.  And I haven't decided I need that since I store all my SD voices on thumb drive.  So if that's important to me than I will use the Mac Mini G4. And run Boot Camp with XP.   I think XP will run the Emuser a lot more stable than Win 7 and support both the EII and Emax communication better.

Anyone run a G4 Mac Mini with Bootcamp with XP?   I think this will have to be a trial and error thing.  It's gonna be tough finding someone that is running EMXP on the exact same configuration.  Another challenge I will run into is the on and off button.  And then grinding out the back for USB ports.  It looks like this guy used a breakout USB hub which is smart, verses trying to align the front CD/DVD slot with the back. Which I don't think the Mac Mini is long enough to do from front to back.

I'll figure it out.

I would recommend using an intel mother board for boot camp running xp.
Or mac mini 4,1 which includes a DVD drive if you need one.

Or the hackintosh mini hardware kits.
I don't have an Emuser currently so I can't really test it's driver compatibility.

I am going to go with a Mini-ITX windows machine off Ebay for $200 (with no cd/dvd drive) and then the Century 8" monitor.  The on/off switch is a simple shutter release cable from a camera (weird implementation).  And then run XP.   This is the cheapest and most stable route I can go.  Still a $400 project but it will be cool when it's done.  Once I get the parts it will take a day of putting it together.  It should be really easy after bending some brackets correctly, and making sure everything is snug.
