How do you use the EML Envelope Follower? (lil yellow box)

How do you use the EML Envelope Follower? (lil yellow box)

2011-08-18 by ukrainiannproud

I first saw one of these on the bay about a month ago (still there, crazy expensive) but have an opportunity to buy one locally for much less.

I want to buy it to augment my 100 and most of the controls and jacks seems self-explanatory except for the power ones. There's an in and an out for power and the one listed and the one locally don't come with a power supply as far as the owners know.

Does the 100/101/200 power it just by connecting it? Why is there an in and an out? Can this be used with a 100 or not? Are there only certain synths that it's useful with?

To my best recalections, the none of the EML synths had any sort of DC power output jacks. Would have been nice though.

I have to assume you are referring to the board level experimenter products that EML produced. I have a couple of the sample & Holds that I use in my SteamSynth, but beyond that, I don't know much.

I'll make a strong assumption however... You'll need to decide how you want to power your (rare) Envelope Follower board. I would NOT modify your EML synth just to bring out the required voltages.

I would strongly suggest a small external power supply, then simply connect the grounds of the two units.

Here is a link to the one on Ebay. The one locally looks exactly the same except it has the original EML knobs.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EML-Envelope-Follower-/270766096428?pt=Keyboards_MIDI&hash=item3f0aeac02c

The power in/out jacks are 1/4". Are these just ground? Should there be a battery inside the yellow box?

Also was there ever an EML 100 manual. Looked in the archives and there appears not to be. An actual 101 manual came with the 100 I bought but was still wondering if there was one for the 100.

Mostly am wondering what voltages would trigger the envelopes on the 100? If I use anything externally does it always have to go through the preamp and be attenuated? Or can I just direct patch things to oscillators, envelopes, filters etc?

Thx best P

Ah, Doug, you're getting old :)

The 401 has a +/- voltage out jack between the Vext input and the trigger out on the lower left of the panel.

It requires a TRS plug to bring otu the voltages and ground.

As far as the Envelope follower goes. I have the EF-1 circuit module and documentation. It requires +/-15V. It looks like the one on eBay is the circuit module mounted into a Radio Shack hobby box that's been painted up really well. I used the same box for the Syntar power supply.

If EML made those, it makes sense that they made them so that you could string boxes of modules together by daisy-chaining the power.

The trim pot on the board is for setting the gate trigger hysteresis. The guy probably didn't need to replace it.

George Mattson.

That MUST be extremely rare. In all my dealings with EML, I didn't know that they might have packaged their units in an enclosure such as this.

That also begs the question if this was actually produced by EML? I frankly do not know! It's plausible, but who knows?

It could be of use.

You'd just have to figure out how to get +/-15VDC to it.

The +/- VDC output out of the 401 is Tip: +15V, Ring: -15V and sleeve is ground. But,  I have no idea how this box is wired. Other than that, it's plug and play.

I bought my circuit module from EML in Jan.1979 and paid $45.00 for it.

$450.00 is too high a price. $150.00 might be more like it. Unless, they're hoping to get some bucks off the "vintage" market.

I make a similar module that does the same thing. But, it has a LED to indicate when the preamp level is reaching a 5V signal level, a LED to indicate when the gate is active and an inverted envelope output in addition to the typical envelope output.

My entire module is around $200.00 and the assembled/ tested module board is only around $80.00.

That's comparable to other modules of the same type in the current market. So, there are options available.

So as an EML 100 owner then this box would have no use for me without modification? It's not just plug and play?
