Electrocomp-101 with a Doepfer Dark Time?

Electrocomp-101 with a Doepfer Dark Time?

2011-08-12 by Oliver Chesler

Hello Everyone,

Is it possible to control an Electrocomp-101 with a Doepfer Dark Time analog sequencer? I have both but can't seem to get it to work. If it is possible can someone tell me what cables I should connect where and what knob settings I should use?

Big thanks for any advice!

- Oliver

Search the archives and you'll see the issue of compatibility between the EML synths and everything else discussed several times, however, the short answer to your question is "no".

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the heads up. I thought that was the answer but I was double checking. I'm using the Dark Time with some other gear (really nice little unit). Too bad it won't work with the 101 too.

Hi Oliver,

Initially it can be a source of frustration that the EML synths won't sync with anything else (it's partly the 1.2v/oct and partly the weirdness of the input jacks) but when you forget about that they're great synths, although I must admit mine is on eBay right now as I haven't used it since I put together my modular.

It has been a VERY long time (1970's) since I worked on a 101, but don't recall why there might be interface problems - not to say that there aren't any. (I was New Jersey EML sales & service back then)

Other than the 1.2 V/oct issue, is it just that the Doepfer is not triggering the 101? I'm pretty sure that could be fixed by adjusting some resistor values in the 101.

Doug, it's not possible to control all 4 VCOs from the jacks on the 101 - it has been suggested here in older posts that the only that might be possible  is via the keyboard socket - so it's not just the 1.2v/oct issue (which can be got round with a Kenton or an old Korg MS-02). Matt
