i actually got the email below from george mattson (of recent mattson mini modular fame) right after i posted my explanation.  (oh, and you can check out his site, which i have absolutely nothing to do with, at http://www.mattsonminimodular.com/)  (oh again - george, if youre getting messages to this group, you can probably just reply via email to emlsynth@yahoogroups.com rather than needing your password to log in.  thats what im doing...)

thanks again mini and george

i had the eml as master clocking an sbx 80 into my midi/sync gear so i
could permutate the sequences within a track, as the manual suggests
dunno if there is a better way to do it
i couldnt work out how it was possible to permutate a sequence when the
eml was being clocked by something else
but it gave cool results
now using autoset i will be the man (well, one of them, after you guys)
