EML 400/401 Auto Set

EML 400/401 Auto Set

2007-10-04 by k636akx

Hi everyone, this is my forst post, so chuffed to make it on here
I have a 200 (blue) - really would like the extra input for the
oscillators that the silver ones seemed to have
I have a 300 (blue) - unusual because it has only 12 user push keys
and dials for the pitch/voltages as opposed to 16
also a 400/401 (silver) - unusual because the synth part has a
additional a/r envelope input/output in the bottom left as well as a
volume attentuation thingy. the sequencer is made from 2 panels as
opposed to one big one (blue and black plastic slider caps - is it
possible to get spares of these?) the gutting thing is that the
quantizer section doesn't quite quantize the 13 pitches into one
octave, even at it's lowest setting, it's slightly out - is it a big
deal to callibrate it. I can just about manage it if i spend ages
setting it up in one particular position. also, i can't get any sound
out of it unless i have a lead plugged into the trigger jack, even if
nothing is on the other end - is this normal.
been using the whole setup for a few years now and love it but i have
no idea what Auto Set jack does on the sequencer, at the bottom near
v3/4 - any info appreciated
i love the weirdness and uniqueness of EML
if anyone has an x-y joystick on the shelf museum style then please
sell it to me because i have hunted high and low and want one more
than any other bit of kit, i need to use it!!!
I heard somewhere that the strange little accessory boxes that you
occasionally see were not made by electrocomp at all but someone with
the same name from NY or near - any truth in that?
also that some of the people went on to develop the synare which is
my favourite percussion machine along with pearl syncussion
well you can see i've been looking forward to hanging out here, i'll
try and upload some photos soon, not much of a modern technology head
tho unfortunately. also i hate it when people put up photos and the
damn things aren't patched up, it's embarrassing, tho better than
nothing i guess.
is there a collection of sounds/tracks for these machines somewhere?
there should be
respect is due to all you lot
peace out

sounds like you should read the eml400 manual!  im guessing its in the files page for this group.  weve seen additional jacks and factory mods added to quite a few EML pieces over the years.  this includes a seriously modified eml-400, an eml-101 with a power out to power an eml-300, eml-101s with spring reverbs, a 6 oscillator eml-500, etc...  so your eml-400 mods arent so unusual.  as for having to insert a jack into the trigger in, im guessing either youre doing something wrong (read the manual) or perhaps the jacks broken.  the latest eml-400 we just put up for sale actually has a jack that was never wired at the factory.  interesting.  i LOVE eml400s, and may post some videos to youtube soon (look up 123synthland for our other analog synth vids).

IL Turner EML Modules

2007-10-05 by mm123 ah

i think there MAY actually be a connection between the IL Turner EML modules from NY and EML of Connecticut.  ive seen an instrument that consists of a bunch of these IL turner modules, mounted into an EML-101 wooden case, with additional faders that match those from the eml500 and eml400.  im thinking either this was a precursor to the EML-100/101 or, perhaps someone who worked at the EML factory helped put these little modules together in a more practical package?  the job doesnt look too professional....
theres a metal panel actually attached to the top of the wooden case.  the sharp metal edge is exposed.  its an accident waiting to happen.
does anyone know when the IL turner modules were produced?

Do a search in the message archive here for "Turner." I contacted Don
Tillman who worked at Turner and designed some of the modules.
"Electronic Music Lab" (singular) was just a classification of where
the modules came from, not a brand name. There was no connection to
the Electronic Music Labs (plural) / Electrocomp brand. It's an
interesting coincidence though.

Re: EML 400/401 Auto Set

i did read the manual of course but maybe i missed it
i must say, i am grateful for your reply but its a bit condescending, i
don;t claim to be a pro or an expert, just an enthusiast and you are
raining on that a bit it seems
i couldn;t find it in the files but i will look again
i read all the posts, just thought i would contribute some small thing.
all eml synths are quite unusual aren't they, aren't there only 200-300
model 200 and 400/401 produced? looking on ebay quite regularly i
havent seen one with this envelope etc but if you know it all already i
will shut up. be good if you post pics or info about these things over
the years rather than expect me to know them too.

RE: [emlsynth] Re: EML 400/401 Auto Set

sorry, i didnt mean to sound condescending, i just thought the manual does a good job at explaining EML400 functions, so if youre unsure about things you should of course check the manual.  the eml400 is complicated as far as analog sequencers go, so anyone whos got one should read the manual thoroughly.
as for photos, i believe mike posted some of my photos to the group pics folder, and you can always see pics of the items weve got for sale at 123synthland.com - right now that includes the eml400 we just put up and an eml101 and eml200 which were sold not too long ago.
as far as i know there were only around 300 eml400s made, but i suspect quite a few were tossed in the 80s when people junked their analogs for DX7s and sample players.  i dont recall the eml200 numbers offhand, i think 400?

oh by the way
i have made about 70 tracks with my eml so i do have a little experience
the auto set jack on the sequencer is not shown or mentioned in the
manual
nor is it shown on the accompanying diagrams!
and i checked and i do have it set up as manual says (by coincidence)
but if i take the patch lead out of trig in jack then the sound *does*
disappear
i guess auto set is something to do with the "set" switch so that you
don't have to wait for the sequencer to clock after the last stage
before starting the rest of a composition playing so that the EML
starts at the beginning at the same time - but i don't know!
also, my factory mods of A-R ENV (gate in/env out/del gate out) and V-P
(in/out) - both of which have 2 dials as well as jacks, are not shown
and i can't find any info on the internet about them

RE: [emlsynth] Re: EML 400/401 Auto Set

the auto set jack will reset the sequencer to step 1 when it receives a pulse.  its commonly used to get the sequencer to play less than 32 or 16 steps.
patch out from the gated pulse jack and in to auto set. when the sequence reaches a step where a bottom fader is over 20% up a pulse is sent out and will reset that side of the sequencer.
i hope this explanation makes sense.

yes thankyou very much

i saw in romeo's old post he actually posted a different manual to
the one i have which mentions auto set and its possibilities tho you
have explained it further, i will experiment, sounds an ideal
addition to the basic design
cheers, all the best

got any info on the matrix pump or the first EML circuits Syntar?

Electrocomp definitely have something special going on
