couple good ones I'd not seen elsewhere, thanks.

So what besides the knobs and form factor leads one to believe
the Matrix Pump unit is from EML? I mean it might very well be
but then again if no one really knows what it is how does one
assume its EML and not someone wanting to match their EML
gear or an EML technician's moonlighting project.

On the theme of pictures, anyone have a photo of a 'Black
Monster'? I've never seen one pictured.

Well if you notice I did put a *?* after prototype. Your second second
guess is a very good one. Myabe I should have just called it an
experimental piece. I was curious enough about it to trace it's ownership
back as far as I could. Here is what it's second owner had to sayabout it:

"Yes, that piece used to be mine. It had been given to me by a guy named
Jim who used to work for EML. As you suspected, it was built there out of
"spare" parts, as an expanmsion for an EML-101 system, just for fun. He
also has a 1 of a kind prototype EML guitar controller looking thing that
is amazingly beautiful, I have never seen a device live it. Sorry, I do
not have a picture, and he has it locked away in storage somewhere for the
last 2 years, he isn't sure which of his storage facilities it is in right
now. Hope you get it back to 100% working order, it's a cool piece! I
sent it to K**** for some reason, so that he could find a good home for
it."

The front panel matches the exact size of the EML101 panel. The multipin
socket on the upper left is the mate to the multipin cable they use on the
sequencer.
The mutipin socket appears to be a breakout of some kind as it's connected
to all those phjone jacks around it. The only label there says
"SYNTO"....anyone guess what that means? Connecting a cable to it and
plugging it into a 400 does nothing but send the sequencer into complete
insanity, all LED's firing.

The first 3 jacks on the left are connected to nothing and the painted
routing lines lead to an empty hole right above them. The rest of the piece
is functional but hard to control. It is a sort of VC
mixer/processer/routing station. I'd love to know what the unfinshed
sections were meant to do.

Certainly someone could have "faked"all this but to fool who and why? At
the very least it is clearly designed to work as an acccessory for other
EML gear.

What is it?

Maybe its for the 101 keyboard considering the form factor?
some of them have a different multipin than others? Though
thats just a guess.

Well yeah, if its made by an EML employee, then thats pretty
obvious its a spare time project... who knows there is a grey
area, sometimes side projects when finished get pitched to the
company as a potential product

As for "faked" I didn't meen to fool people but as you probably
know a lot of people who build a synth studio based around a
brand will logically have any custom stuff if possible match their
studio to look visually integrated.

Thanks for the info, I was just curious because it didn't visually
look much like a prototype, though I didn't doubt its very
intentional EML styling

the first EML synth, built on contract for the Connecticut State
college system in 1968 in a quantity of 20. The contract stated
that had to weigh a minimum of 200 pounds so it couldn't be
stolen by college students, so they incorporated a cinder block
inside.

The only multipin jack on 101's I have seen is much smaller, about 1/2"
diameter and it has 4 pins. I kinda doubt they would use this larger multi
on the 101, it is about double that size with about a dozen pins. Unless
they just ran out of the smaller plugs and had to use them. But then
wouldn't there only be the need to hard wire 4 of the actual pins? The
multi on the MP has each of the pins hard wired to a specific jack. I think
it's more likely it was to go to the sequencer or possibly the 200 or 300.
Since the jack is labeled "SYNTO INTERFACE" I suppose it's possible they
were cooking up something new too. Anyone ever heard of a Synto?

My name is Barry Michael and I am replying to the
first post I have recieved from this group. I own an
EML 400/400/401 sequencer in pretty much pristine
condition. Like to know if anyone else has one, or has
worked on them at all. I would like to maybe do some
mods on mine, without altering the value at all if
possible ( like under the hood ) any help appreciated
