Best Mac to run SD on?

Best Mac to run SD on?

2010-04-12 by Gino

I apologize if this has been covered before, but I just can't find a specific answer after searching the posts. Got this Emax Rack SE, HD with SD 1.2 disks. Wondered what the best older mac to do the job was? I can get Pluses, SEs, Classics, PowerPC, and G4s all day just wanted to pick the right one for the job. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would be running this via serial not MIDI.

Also came with the following preset disks if anyone looking for a copy of one of these:

SoundDesigner E-mu Emax Version 1.12 Backup Disk
SoundDesigner Sound Files
SoundDesigner E-mu Emax Version 1.12 Master Disk
Mariba/Vibes ZD710

Hi,

Having these SoundDesigner for Emax 1.12 disks (master, backup and sound files) is really UNIQUE !

So I think the group would really appreciate it if you can manage to make 100% (raw) copies of these disks and load the images to the files section.
I suggest to use OmniFlop on Windows XP/Vista to make the copies - the disks contain a kind of copyright protection scheme if I remember well, but OmniFlop will ignore these.

Currently the only way of sharing SD for Emax 1.12 is by means of a 60MB harddisk image - you can imagine that your floppy disk images will be a much more comfortable way for sharing the software :) !!

Many thanks in advance !

Re: Best Mac to run SD on?

I forgot: probably the disks are 800KB Mac disks.
These can't be copied on Windows machines as far as I know, not even by OmniFlop.

So some raw disk copy software on Mac OS 7.x should be used.
Mmm... I have no idea what the best software would be. I'm not a Mac specialist.
Note that just copying the files from the disks is not a good solution: the files will not run without the original disk.

Anyone has a suggestion to make these raw copies ?

E-Synthesist and Gino:

I run a Macintosh SE/30 with a large number of Macintosh disk utilities, including Lido 7 and some others. I'm sure one of these programs could create image files of these floppies, as I've used them for similar applications.

Best of luck with this. It would be great to have a working copy of Sound Designer for Emax for all to share!

Best,
DBM

Disk Dup Plus will work to copy the raw disks on old Mac OS.
It was able to backup my Alchemy Master disk with the authorization
locks on it (just like ProTools used to have on their floppies).

I found it on the web, but if someone needs it and can't find it off
the web, email me off list.

Ted

Re: [emax] Re: Best Mac to run SD on?

I'll try a few things... also asked DBM to send me that program he suggested. Think I'll try the old SE30 that should be cool maybe with an 800K and SuperDrive combo. Maybe use the old Iomega to transfer to SCSI Zip100 then move that to the old G3 then up to the group. I did somthing similar when I converted the original CMU-800 program to my CMU yahoo group. I went from an Apple IIe, to a IIgs to a PowerPC.

G
