DIsk Not Formatted!

DIsk Not Formatted!

2009-10-06 by roberth909

Hello,
I bought a used Emax recently. Every now and then I get a "Disk Not Formatted!" error when it's trying to load the software, and when it decides to move beyond the error, then the floppy seems to work fine. Now it seems to be in a state where I can't move beyond the error and I can't load the OS. I did successfully install an external SCSI jack and I was able to format a Zip disk a few days ago. Is there OS Plus 1.0 on the Zip disk? And if so can I get it to boot from the Zip disk? I've tried to insert the floppy again and again, I've repeatedly rebooted the Emax, all I get is a crunching sound in the floppy drive and the error message like it's trying its best to read the floppy but just can't pull it off. Is it time replace the floppy drive, I'm sure it's the original drive.
Thanks!
Robert

If when you formatted the zip you copied the plus OS to it, then yes-
but keep in mind unless you have a Zip that can be set to ID0, the
Emax won't boot from it.

Ted

Ted,
Are you sure about the ID 0 setting? if it's a SCSI zip drive, you should be able to
tell the Emax in the master section what SCSI ID to boot from.

I don't use Zip drives, so I'm not sure..

Emax 2 you can set.
Emax 1 must be ID 0.

I pried open the zip to see if there was some obvious way to override and 5/6 switch and set it to 0, it didn't look very promising. Has anyone else done this?

emax will only boot from scsi id 0 as thats writtten in the os code it will format on any scsi id and will reed disks in any scsi id with the plus operating system were you can change the scsi id

but booting the os from scsi it has to bee on scsi id 0 and if you are using an external zip drive they will only terminate on id 5 or id 6 with out termination its not the emaxes fault but iomega,s fault in only letting it adress those 2 scsi id if you want to use an external scsi cartridge drive then get either a ez135 or ez230 by syquest these can be set to any scsi id and dont suffer the click of death as do zip drives or better still get a card drive from ted which will cost you a little more but you can use compactflash cards at 32mb with out much wastage as the emax can only format to 20mb so thats only 12mb wastage compared to 80mb on a zip disk

I haven't done what you are talking about because I have installed an internal zip in my Emax, but there is a way you could do what you are talking about.

Get an external SCSI drive closure (from ebay or wherever) and put an internal zip drive in the enclosure, then you will have an external zip and you can set the ID to whatever you like. I actually have one set up like this that I use sometimes for my Emax II. One day I might install the external SCSI port and use it like that, but I think I would prefer a card reader for less noise.

Re: DIsk Not Formatted!

I think a card reader is making a lot of sense. I'm only trying to use the Zip drive because I already own it and it's not being used for anything else. Heck, I have a 2GB SCSI Jaz that's not being used for anything (where I can set the SCSI ID to anything), but that would really be wasting storage space. Is there room to mount both a card reader and a small floppy drive in the front of a keyboard Emax I?
Thanks,
Robert
