disk trouble

2002-01-22 by monsdrum

Hi there

I own an emax sampler with a broken disk drive. I've tried replacing
it with a standard PCdrive, but even though the connections fit, it
doesn't communicate. The one tech support guy I could find who
actually remembers once repairing some of these things told me, that
an old ATARI diskdrive might do the trick for me, but where do I find
that?
The questions for you guys are:

1) does anyone know of a way to get hold of one of these
ATARIdrives?, or

2) does anyone know of some kind of app that will allow a pc (or mac)
to read sounds from an emaxdisk and save them as wave, aiff or some
other commonly used modern format.

Please help me, a lot of years hard work is running out the drain
here.

Thanx

The only way to get the samples out of the Emax format and onto a PC is over MIDI
Sample Dump. Some programs for the PC are Sound Forge, Samplitude, and Awave.
For the Mac there is Passport's Alchemy which you can actually use with a home built
RS-422 cable in conjection with the serial port for fater transfers than SDS and Sound
Designer (I think that's right).

Hey

Alchemy is the way to go if you have a Mac. If you can find a copy for sale
try to get version 3.

Hi,
A standard PC drive can not be set to ID = 0, which is what the Emax
requires. You can buy a new TEAC FD235HF-A529 drive (which is black) from a
TEAC dealer, also ask for a 41mm high bezel to make it half height. This
drive can be jumpered to ID (DS) = 0, we can send you the details. They work
really well.

If you are in the USA you can get them from Route 66 Studio (search this in
Google). We don't sell them anymore, unless you really can't locate one
elsewhere. They are US Dollars 100 from us.

An old ATARI drive may work, but you are best off buying a new one.

Go for Alchemy as you can convert to/from .wav files - there is a free
download on our web site that may work fine for you.

Regards and check out our web site for everything about Emax's.

Second hand shops? Ebay? They're not hard to get hold of. The drives are
Shugart rather than PC drives, and the pin connections are slightly
different. Dig about on www.buchty.net (possibly in the Casio section) for
details of a converter cable. I've never made it up but I suspect it would
work for the Emax.

OK, how do I do that? I remember once doing a MIDI sample transfer
between the emax and another sampler, and though the result wasn't
astounding, at least there was a data transfer. Now, I can't find a
way to initiate a sample dump from within the emax, and it doesn't
respond to a request. I've searched the menus as well as the manual.
I'm using awave (PC). What could I be doing wrong??

All help very much appreciated

Hi,
MIDI Sample Dump on the Emax is rather basic. The Emax can not initiate, but
it will respond to a request to transfer. Check you have a preset loaded
with voices, and that Awave is pointing at the right MIDI channel, preset
and voice. Try loading a preset and voice into 00 rather than 01. Make sure
there is no other MIDI mergers between computer MIDI interface and Emax. All
the usual MIDI SDS hassles !! I am sure some one on the list has done this
!

I have a pretty lengthy tutorial on this in regards to the Emax II on my website, I use
Sound Forge though, but it should give you enough info regardless of software. Here is
a direct link to the page.

http://www.silveriafamily.com/emax/emax2_midisdsguide.html

The link can be found from the Emax II FAQ.

John,

thanx for the link, I am going to try it out. If it doesnt work, I'll
accept that everything has an end, record the samples I cannot do
without to transfer them to my s5000 and my EXS24, and eventually,
whichever way I succed to backup the samples I will get rid of the
emax. There comes a time when you have to face, that life goes on...

Thanx again

I know it can work, for 12 years I've been using SDS between my computers and my
Emax, Emax II, and ESI-32. The main thing is first to remove everything in your MIDI
chain and make sure the Emax II is connected both MIDI IN and OUT to the computer
directly. Make sure the global MIDI setting is set to a single MIDI channel, I'd use
Channel 1. Good luck! Let us know what happens.

Re: disk trouble

It works!!

I am getting my samples through to the PC HD in good condition.
Though the samplerate is a bit odd, this is nothing my wave editor
can't handle, so soon I'm about to wave goodbye to the emax. Sort of
sad, but in a good way.

I have a few guys who I'll have to ask first if they want it. If they
don't I'll let this list know.
It's no emaxII, I'm afraid. It's the absolute basic emax model,
merely named emax, since emu may not even have considered that they
would make more models by the time they made this. You'll know in a
few days if it's available.

Thanx to you all for your help - these bb's are just great!!

monsdrum

Re: [emax] Re: disk trouble

2002-01-25 by John Silveria

Yes, the Emax's use of very non-standard sample rate can be a bit tricky to work with,
so can the fact that they are 12 not 8 or 16 bit samples. However that really only
becomes an issue on older software and soundcards that can only play back 8 or 16 bit
samples. It's one of the reasons why the Emax II can accept 44.1kHz 16 bit samples
though it can make samples that high itself.

One of my friends took it, so there's no emax giveaway on this list
from me this time. Thanx again for the help. As soon as my mate gets
it, I'll give him the route66 link, so you guys might as well get a
diskdrive ready to ship - he's probably gonna order it.
