Does anyone have a dead Emax II that I could get the memory expansion from? I've got a 2M stereo one, I know there are different versions of the expansion board. Also, does anyone know how to calculate the "magic number" to get into the e2prom menu? Thanks Gordon

That magic number can only be generated on 1 computer at E-mu.
From how I understand what I was told it was hard written to an e-
prom or something like that inside a really old computer and they
never bothered/can't recompile it to run on a different system
because the person who wrote it is no longer with them.
Bear in mind I'm not that technically knowledgable so I don't
understand fully what I was told, but that is it in a nutshell.
I beleive I was also told that memory can't be simply pulled out of
one unit and plugged into the other, you need the actual install disk
as it reprograms some chips, the magic code only works after the
disc has been ran and failed.
Does that sound right?

Sounds about right. Ah well, that probably means there's going to be another Emax II for sale soon... Just got to have more sample time. -----Original Message----- From: John Silveria <emaxjs@...> To: emax@yahoogroups.com <emax@yahoogroups.com> Date: 26 June 2001 06:01 Subject: Re: [emax] Wanted - Emax II Memory expansion >That magic number can only be generated on 1 computer at E-mu. >From how I understand what I was told it was hard written to an e- >prom or something like that inside a really old computer and they >never bothered/can't recompile it to run on a different system >because the person who wrote it is no longer with them. > >Bear in mind I'm not that technically knowledgable so I don't >understand fully what I was told, but that is it in a nutshell. > >I beleive I was also told that memory can't be simply pulled out of >one unit and plugged into the other, you need the actual install disk >as it reprograms some chips, the magic code only works after the >disc has been ran and failed. > >Does that sound right? > >On 26 Jun 2001, at 0:34, Gordon Pearce wrote: > >> Does anyone have a dead Emax II that I could get the memory expansion from? >> I've got a 2M stereo one, I know there are different versions of the >> expansion board. >> Also, does anyone know how to calculate the "magic number" to get into the

Hi, Thanks John for the info. Typical of E-mu to loose the legacy stuff...they have no concept of history!! The swap can be done. Find an 8MB Emax II with a working main board. Then swap the main board and daughter board of memory into your original Emax II. However an Emax II with working mainboard is likely to be repairable rather than scrap. Although a broken case, keyboard or LCD would probably put an Emax II out of action. In reality the cheapest route to an 8MB Emax II is to buy a s/h one. Thats what we ended up doing. 2MB upgardes can be bought from Sound Logic at http://www.ramona.com/Soundlogic/SLorigcat.html. They have the upgrade diskettes, but I don't think they have the daughter boards for mounting the memory. Rats!! Regards Rob

Wow! $118 per 2Mb upgrade. That means to take my 4Mb unit to
8Mb it would cost $236 + tax and s/h. It would be a better deal for
me to just get another 4Mb unit and chain them together.
Am I right in remembering the Emax II can do MIDI overflow and
steal voices from another Emax II unit it's MIDI'd to?
