Re: EMAX I / II

2004-09-07 by angeyoda

OK,
it's a sort of low pitched flute,very granular & windy ...
I've heard it recently in BRAVEHEART's music by James Horner...
I expect it having being used a lot in battle or celtic films .
It sounds very mysterious , tribal , & give you the flavour of the
desert ...(?!)

& Duran Duran used it as well in "Wild boys"...If you can find the
track it's appearing at 0'48 ...

I have a doubt it might comes as well from a fairlight CMI ...
I should add that I have heard it in XL7 sound banks, but
unfortunetaly a lot less granular & ballsy than the original 80's
sound.
The duran duran track have been made in 84 so the unit which does it
was released in early 80's ...
I'm afraid that's all I can say .

thanks for your interest & your help !
Patrice.

Re: [emax] Re: EMAX I / II

The sound in"Wild Boys" is definitely Nick's Fairlight CMI.

There is a bank for the Emax called Loon Garden (ZD733). It has a couple of sounds
that are exactly like what you describe. I believe it's a sample of a bottle flute or a bottle
being blown into like a flute.

The Fairlight sound is called "Swanee: a breathy woodwind/panpipe sound "

You can get the Fairlight bank here: http://www.hollowsun.com/vintage/fairlight/

I'm not sure if there is a place to download the Emax bank.

Well, thanks very much for your precisions...
Do you think the sound will be as much as granular in the Emax than
in a fairlight ? or close to it ?
What fairlight do you think it is ? The fairlight CMI II ?

what about the EMU II, it seems having some same sort of sounds ...

Many thanks again.
Patrice.

Re: [emax] Re: EMAX I / II

2004-09-07 by John Silveria

It would not be surprising to me if the Loon Garden samples could be found in the E-II,
Emax, and Emax II since they all shared base samples from which their individual banks
were created.

Based on the age of recordings using the Fairlight that uses that sound I'd say your
guess that it is a Fairlight CMI series 2 is correct, but once again it is such a
recognizable sound I wouldn't be surprised is it made an appearance in all versions.
The link I gave you is to the Fairlight bank converted into Akai format, I believe.

I can't remember right now, but wasn't the Fairlight CMI series 2 a 8 bit machine? In any
case you can easily make the sample more granular soundaing by resampling, lowering
bit rates, transposing, etc..

RE: [emax] Re: EMAX I / II

2004-09-07 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
Loon Garden started out back in E1 days and was extended with more samples
into the EII and Emax, and called Loon Garden. The flute sound is a
Shakuhachi , it works very well in 8-bit samplers like the early CMI and
EII. But they are NOT the same sample. It was a popular early 80's sounds
from samplers and DX's....

E-mu Systems didn't resample CMI samples for their professional libraries.
They had their own dedicated sampling team, and created original samples
using UNIX compters for looping etc. They were significantly ahead of any
other sampling companies in 1982 - 88. Those were the days...

The CMI and E1 are more granular than emax or EII. EII has the better sound
of any, pre - 1987 and 16-bits

Regards
Rob

Well, thanks very much for your precisions...
Do you think the sound will be as much as granular in the Emax than
in a fairlight ? or close to it ?
What fairlight do you think it is ? The fairlight CMI II ?

what about the EMU II, it seems having some same sort of sounds ...

  Many thanks again.
  Patrice.

EMAX I to ESi

2004-09-23 by Garth Hjelte

Have any of you encountered this as normal?

I got some files; EMX disk images of EMAX1 floppies. The goal was to put
these on an E3 CD.

So I used EMX to write them to a DS/DD floppy, and loaded them into an Emax
II, since the ESi does not read Emax I disks. Then I took those banks
(separately, of course) and saved them onto a ZipDisk.

I then tried to Convert Load them into an ESi-32, with v3 software. It
would crash on some of them, in a consistent manner. However, they easily
load and playback well in the Emax II.

Is the Convert Load of Emax II stuff in the ESi prone to error?

I use the convert/load between my Emax II and Esi-32 all the time as they are actually in
a SCSI loop together with my two different Syquest drives. I've never had it crash. It
probably has something to do with the EMX files perhaps there is something corrupted
in them that the Emax II doesn't recognize.

Re: EMAX I to ESi

you have to convert the emx disk-images in dos
so boot up dos ,start emx, load the emx-image,and write to a ds/dd
floppy
if you convert in windows ,the written ds/dd floppies are corrupted,
and also my Emax-II crashes or it dispays very weird symbols on the
dispay
