Upgrading Standard Emax 3.2 to SE problems

Upgrading Standard Emax 3.2 to SE problems

2016-04-12 by bunman1973@...

Hi all,

I m using emax se image off this site.

I write it with omniflop windows xp 32 bit.

Then install newly written Se disk in Emax .

Goes through process loading , and at the end of process says .write enable disk and reboot

1) Confirm you are using DSDD disk, not HD disk
2) Confirm you have not set the WRITE PROTECT tab on the disk.
This is a single use disk for update purposes.
The program has to read a bit and write a bit back to the disk to indicate it has been used. If it can’t do that - update will fail.

Might be a better chance it will work if you DO write it on your Emax first….certainly wouldn’t expect it to hurt.
Another question would be does another disk written only on Omniflop works or not- because reality is there is a possiblility the alignment between your Emax drive and PC floppy may not be the same, which also would cause problems- so check that.

You have to put some tape over the write protect tab.
I had the same issue.
The floppy drive didn't recognise the disks built-in write-protect tab so I had to also cover it with tape!
Weird, I know.

FDD was not faulty

I taped up holes when Carl had mentioned to do it but I overlooked the protection tab.

One last try I taped up the protection tab when Jay mentioned it ,did the trick .

Finally !! success upgraded to a SE ,

emax is freaky man

Thank for your help guys

Nice one :)

Yes, it is very odd that you have to tape up the protection tabs. Certainly it is not obvious.

Emax does sound great. I mended an Emax last month, now I'm trying to find one to buy for myself!

The sensor in the drive likely is faulty. Replace the drive.

As to the 2nd unit- check for bad solder of the AC IN connections on the power supply.
If you don’t find bad solder joints there, it’s most likely either going to be the power supply or possibly the power switch.

Will do regarding power !!

I will replace both floppy's with a floppy emulator.

I have briefly researched the floppy emulator topic.

Will a gotek work or I need hxc.

And has anyone here got a image for the relevant data that you need to dump on sd card for the floppy emulator to work ?

And will a standard rs422 cable for the emax to operate with EMXP via pc ?

Re: [emax] Upgrading Standard Emax 3.2 to SE problems

I put a scsi2sd drive inside instead so there is no need to use the floppy drive any more.

The Emax I repaired was all rusty. I cleaned it all up but the floppy drive really should have been replaced. But when you have 4 hard drives on a microSD card I didn’t see the point. All the clients’ old floppies were damaged from the environment anyway… and if you really want to put a found floppy onto the hard drives you just do it with the EMXP program and whack it on the microSD card.

My 2 pence :)

Whats the benefit of scsi2sd instead of say a hxc floppy emulator ?

I want the most cost efficient method and best functionality with a floppy emulator device .

Re: [emax] Re: Upgrading Standard Emax 3.2 to SE problems

The scsi2sd allows 4 scsi hard drives on one microSD card.
Each of the 4 is 20MB and can store up to 35 banks.
It’s very fast too, compared to a floppy.

ofc it’ll only work with Emax’s with the scsi chip inside.

The scsi2sd is cheaper than the HxC as well!

If it is an Emax HD, otherwise I’m not sure.
Someone pointed me to this site —> https://djtbs1.wordpress.com/ <https://djtbs1.wordpress.com/> where the fella sells the Emax I SCSI setup chip, etc.
I’m not a master on this though. I’ve only ever seen an Emax I HD.

This question is why I send new members the FAQ page.

https://djtbs1.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/scsi-kit-do-i-need-one/

Pros for SCSI versus HxC —
not a hack, the chips are from E-mu provided binaries
functionality built in the Emax menus.
Faster loading than HxC
Fast bank switching
No special procedures for use- it’s covered in the Emax manuals…. boot from floppy, format HD, the OS gets written to HD, now boot, read and write banks to / from HD.

DISCLAIMER- I sell the SCSI upgrade chipsets.
