Turbosynth 2.0 + hardware sampler

Turbosynth 2.0 + hardware sampler

2014-12-23 by Robin Sutcliffe

Hi,
I'm looking to set up a Turbosynth system using a hardware sampler. I wonder if anyone here has tips on what will/not work in terms of the system? I know that it must be version 2.0 as latest.
I heard 2.0 will not run on PPC machines, and is optimal on system 7. I was thinking of one of this range would be suited:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_ii/specs/mac_iici.html

And a Digi DSP card and MIDI interface. I think it works with many Digi Nubus cards of this era. Are there any cards it's better to avoid/choose?
I am also looking for a copy of Turbosynth 2.0. Could anybody let me have access to a copy please? I would be willing to pay for it.
Thanks very much for any info or guidance!
Happy Winter Solstice and all the best for 2015

Happy winter solstice to you to!

You can download a copy of TurboSynth from the files section of the group. It';s 2.2x something.
I've used it on a Quadra 700, and now on a PowerMac 7100/66av. I got a Nubus AudioMedia II card with the PowerMac.

That said, TurboSynth runs on both machines, digi card or not. It even runs on some 68k Mac emulators if I'm not mistaken. As to actually connect it to a sampler... Didn't do that. My Emax 2 is connected with the serial cable, but I use Alchemy to exchange samples (I have SDII, but I personally prefer Alchemy).
So I produce whatever I want with TurboSynth (when it actually happens, but that's a different story) and save the output to a standard format. I can dump the wave to whichever sampler I want.

I also setup a nice NAS on my network with an FTP server, pointing to a directory accessible to all my computers. Since I connected my PowerMac to the network, I upload/download the sample files and share them that way.

That said, there are more modern ways to transfer files to an Emax and use TurboSynth...

The reason I got into that is just the fun of using those old machines and setup.

Francis

Hi Francis,

Thanks very much for your insight and workflow tips! And thanks very much to drsyncenstein for the download files.

I'll post a new message when I get it running in the new year.

No prob. If you stick to a 68k machine, try getting a Quadra.

I haven't used anything for lack of free time, but I found the PowerMac less stable than the Quadra with TurboSynth. And honestly, I didn't see any speed gain. The appeal to me was that I use the AV inputs of the 7100/AV for the TV output of my Roland S-550 sampler, otherwise the Quadras were great machines.

I got the Quadra 700 for 20$, but ram is an issue as it uses 30 pin simms. I would have prefered the Quadra 840av, as it was the fastest and uses 72 pin simms and has the AV I wanted for the S-550. Finding a 840av is not an easy task, even less so here in Montreal...

Thank for the advice Francis! I found a Quadra 840av for 60euros so I'll try that out 1st without a DSP from digi and see how it runs, maybe add one later.
Thanks again,

Re: [emax] Turbosynth 2.0 + hardware sampler

2014-12-27 by Robin Sutcliffe

Hi Francis, I'm trying to use Turbosynth 2.0 under sheepshaver emulation with OS 7.5.3 (before I get the Quadra just to check it runs)

2.0 will not playback audio due to a program error. V 2.21, and the demo 1.0 version WILL playback audio on the same machine.

I think it should work and there may be something I'm missing which is key! I wondered if you had used V-2.0 with the Quadra? (Before I buy a machine I wanted to make sure it runs!)

Will Turbosynth 2.0 run on OS 7.5.3, or 7.5.1?

Do you, or anyone, have any further tips please? The error is only specified as program error. It loads fine and this is the only issue so probably could be an audio setting somewhere. I have checked to see if I can find something to adjust but without success so far.

I sometime see the error code 10 and the bomb icon when trying to playback from the sample window and then the system crashes.

Any info welcomed!

Thanks very much,

Robin

Thinking perhaps a 68k/PPC issue in the emulator actually. I think it's emulating a 68k but if it's a PPC then 2.0 won't run. . .

Re: [emax] Turbosynth 2.0 + hardware sampler

I haven't tried SheepShaver, since I have actual Macs.
I tried 2.21 on the Quadra 700, PowerMac 7100 and a Wallstreet II PowerBook G3 and it ran on all of them.
The G3 runs OS 9.2.2. The others run 7.5.5.

If you intend to use Digi Hardware and Sound Designer II, you have to stick to max 7.5.5.

Otherwiser, TurboSynth, Alchemy, will run fin with 8 or 9 from what I tested.

Ok good to know thanks Francis,

I wonder if it is something from 2.0 specifically incorrect, like it's too early release for the machine, but then the V1.0 does run (albeit shaky) This Quadra has 7.5.1 so, hopefully it will work. I'll take a copy along and try to run it before I buy it. I'm sure the OS is fine but unsure of the architecture.

Thanks very much! Have a nice Evening (whenever your next one is!)

I downloaded it from the files section here in the group. Unzipped only in the mac itself, not before (I can't download to that machine). I did download again to see if it was a corruption. Poss. something going wrong with the transfer I suppose but zipped files are not normally affected by this. Thanks

Turbosynth 2.21 will run on any 68k mac and up to 7.6.1 if i recall correct.
Works here on 840AV and Powermac 8100.
Never tried sheepshaver, but i just checked that it works on Basilisk II.

Turbosynth 2.0 might be a different case, i have that running on a IICI with soundaccelarator card, but am not sure if it will even run without the correct digidesign hardware.
Matching the right software (DAE extensions, OS versions) to the digidesign hardware can be a bitch. I have been planning to sort it out and write it down for some years now ;). Could be that it runs and specific functions don't work, like the diffuser for example. The good part with version 2.0 is all the samplers that are supported, the bad part is that it won't read patches created with the newer versions, which have more modules.
You could use the 2.2 version and dump to the sampler with Alchemy or one of the sound designer versions. Sound designer universal 1.5 supports many samplers and there is a specific SD version for emax.

Could it be that it only crashes with certain functions?

Re: [emax] Re: Turbosynth 2.0 + hardware sampler

Hi drsyncenstein, Francis,

I have Turbosynth 2.0 running now on a Quadra 840AV with 7.5.1. I still get some problems with it but I think I have worked out when it can't play a sound (when it's still calculating numbers from the last one, even though you don't hear it anymore - it tends to be with longer delay sounds) In general it works though. I don't think it's a RAM issue as it has 40mb in the Quadra. I'm going to try and create a lot of modules to see what the RAM limit is. Could always get some more RAM, pretty cheap now!

I know that the diffuser in 2.21 requires the hardware to run for sure. I had thought of using 2.21 to create and using SD to export. That's not such a big workaround. I've not installed 2.21 just yet but don't think there will be an issue with it.

Yeah the hardware thing probably would clear up the issues with 2.0 but as you said, matching is a headache/gamble. Do you know if it will run with Audiomedia cards btw?

Thanks for the advice, happy to have it up and running. Just await my midi interface now . . .

Not as an accelerator, only the 2.2 version works with audiomedia cards.

But it should be possible to play the audio through it, if you use the sound manager playback setting and set the sound control panel to the audiomedia card.

To set up sound manager see here: https://happymacs.wordpress.com/tag/audiomedia-ii/ (not mine).

The turbosynth manual is here http://theviirus.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/turbosynth_manual.pdf but i will upload it here too (not mine either).

ill look for my several disks i have the original version and several updates up to the pci

as i never updated to the pci because of the sampler support discontinue this is because the midi implementation was changed on the pci version and digidesign could not be bothered to update drivers which led me to believe that digidesign never really coded anything but used some one elses code and just brought you can tell this by each mac developement as when it changed digidesign just dropped suppot

yes all the soundtools 1/2 and audiomedia1/2 are nubus slot cards and only fit pre pci nubus slot machines

quadra800av was the last model but be carefull as there are quadras that were pci slot based

i still use a macIIci with max ram 128mb and a special monitor that can be turned around so that you can have it landscape or virtical which i still use for my eii and eiii it works great with the mirage and other samplers and does smdi support for those samplers that support scsi dump transfers

its great to record in 48khz 16bits and dump to the emax eii in glorious 8 bit compressed format and how most of the eii/eiii library was made
north star cdroms were also produced this way and they also ported the library to the eiii in its original 16bit format sd2 is still a great piece of software and turbo synth is a great way of getting new spectral synthesis material into these old samplers with very small memory

also some machines have pds slots with this type you need to have a pds to nubus card this usually gives you 2 nubus slots

avoid these machines as the pds adapters are harder to find than the mac computers

os7.6 is really the highest version to use with these cards as when it went to os8 the midi became different and why avid dropped sampler support as it meant them writing new midi drivers and they could not be bothered

Ok good to know thanks Jamie, I have a Quadra 840AV. Updated it to 7.5.5 yesterday. Now it has network capability I'm going to do a clean install from a network access floppy. The hard disc is very fragmented and also I updated it from a Dutch OS to English so it has a mixed up system folder. Seems stable but I know it';s better to do a clean install.

I ordered some more ram from here
I'll install the RAM, Soundcard and change the PRAM battery at the same time. Should be lovely with a fresh install of 7.5.5!

Seems stable but I know it's better to do a clean install.

I ordered some more ram from here
I'll install the RAM, Soundcard and change the PRAM battery at the same time. Should be lovely with a fresh install of 7.5.5!

i still use a macIIci with max ram 128mb and a special monitor that can be turned around so that you can have it landscape or virtical which i still use for my eii and eiii it works great with the mirage and other samplers and does smdi support for those samplers that support scsi dump transfers

its great to record in 48khz 16bits and dump to the emax eii in glorious 8 bit compressed format and how most of the eii/eiii library was made
north star cdroms were also produced this way and they also ported the library to the eiii in its original 16bit format sd2 is still a great piece of software and turbo synth is a great way of getting new spectral synthesis material into these old samplers with very small memory

also some machines have pds slots with this type you need to have a pds to nubus card this usually gives you 2 nubus slots

avoid these machines as the pds adapters are harder to find than the mac computers

os7.6 is really the highest version to use with these cards as when it went to os8 the midi became different and why avid dropped sampler support as it meant them writing new midi drivers and they could not be bothered

I found 2 great disc images online which are bootable and have all kinds of classic mac OS, recovery utilities, disk copy and formatting utils, network scrpts, Open Transport, Apple Share etc.

They are torrent downloads, I can provide a link to them if you want to reply off list. Most of this is available online but it's really handy to have it all on a CD which you can also boot from (if you have a CD ROM) The software all runs from the CD.

I used the disks yesterday and quickly formatted the drive, installed 7.6 and updated to 7.6.1. The disk has recovery and install software from 6 through 8, amongst other things. Very handy.

I'll install the RAM, Soundcard and change the PRAM battery at the same time. Should be lovely with a fresh install of 7.5.5!

its great to record in 48khz 16bits and dump to the emax eii in glorious 8 bit compressed format and how most of the eii/eiii library was made
north star cdroms were also produced this way and they also ported the library to the eiii in its original 16bit format sd2 is still a great piece of software and turbo synth is a great way of getting new spectral synthesis material into these old samplers with very small memory

also some machines have pds slots with this type you need to have a pds to nubus card this usually gives you 2 nubus slots

avoid these machines as the pds adapters are harder to find than the mac computers

os7.6 is really the highest version to use with these cards as when it went to os8 the midi became different and why avid dropped sampler support as it meant them writing new midi drivers and they could not be bothered

Very handy.
