Let's see if I can remember this right. With the Emax the filters are 
hardware, but with the Emax II the filters are digital therefore part of the 
OS? All of the Digital Editing features are OS based, but the ADC is 
hardware reliant.

Well most everything from drive control to audio output is very much 
based on OS control of hardware controllers. In order to add memory 
you need to reprogram some Eproms. In order to go from a mono unit 
to stereo you need both a hardware and OS upgrade. It's all very 
interdependant which is why the Emax OS wouldn't work in the Emax 
II and vice-versa since there are many hardware differences though the 
OS controlled aspects are still very much the same (editing, preset 
management etc).

Of course,  I do not claim to be very knowledgable in these techie 
issues.
