Something Im really wondering is

Of the OS (operation system) what things are in the software and what things are in the hardware?   is it all in the software.. ?


or Maybe I should be more specific and ask what specific things/changes/mods would require just changes in the software OS , or would require changes in the hardware (Eproms and..)  ?
