CF / SD details for PCD-50b

2009-09-24 by Ted Summers

Looking at the Technical documentation for the PCD-50b, I find that
the specs the drive are compatible with "slot-wise" is:
Compact Flash Specification Version 1.4 ---- CF card
 Smart Media Specification Version 1.20
Secure Digital Specification Version 1.0 ---- SD card
 MMC System Specification version 2.1
Memory Stick Format Specification Version 1.3
PCMCIA Specification Version 2.0 --- PC Card

Knowing that the Doc I have refers to release 1.0 of the drive and may
not account for firmware update.....drives are updated to firmware 1.28
With that in mind, I researched and found SD spec 1.0 supports Class 2
cards up to 2GB.
CF card spec 1.4 supports CF sizes up to 137GB.
PCMCIA Spec 2.0 supports hard drives possibly bigger than 137GB as it
is "downward" compatible with CF.

With that being said, by using the PCMCIA slot (the only slot
compatible with Emax), assuming you are using a supported "class" of
card (interpreted here as "speed" of the card), you should be able to
use any card via an adapter that is smaller than 137GB with other
equipment, and Class 2.
Class 4 may work, but I don't have a way to confirm it.

Anyways, hope that may be helpful to someone.... as people get these
drives and test with media- if they can let the group know what works
(max size for Emax and Emax 2 if available) that would be very helpful.
Also- if the drive works in other equipment with larger cards, etc,
that would be great to know also- I am getting a few emails from other
users wanting to know if the drives are compatible with other equipment.

Regards,
Ted
