Emax

Hopefully I am doing something wrong but I cannot get sampling to work. 
1st I erase the memory so I have everything dedicated to sampling. Then I hit the sample button I place the sample and set the sample rate the sample length. Next I set the threshold but when I have the threshold on the screen and I hit a pad on my mpc with drum sound on it I see the threshold meter on the emax move. I arm sampling and as soon as I press the pad it says sampling then i stop it. It seems like I'm following the steps correctly but then I will hit the keys where I set it to be and there is no sound at all. I cam press any key and there is no sound. I continued to experiment and found when I set the sample to appear on the keys all the way to the left when I play back the sample its just sounds like pitched up static. Everything else on the emax works as far as I know but I'm wondering if the sampling is broken which would be unfortunate because that's the main reason I bought the emax. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
