5380 SCSI IC

2007-07-27 by ted Summers

I know I had seen recently people looking for these, and saying they
were unable to find them... so here are a couple of links....

5380 is ALSO 53C80

http://ks5.isocomponents.com/part/KS53C80
http://www.digchip.com/datasheets/quote.php?action=search&pn=53C80
http://www.1sourcecomponents.com/partnumber/parts1p3487.htm

On these pages you will note that some suppliers have 10, others have
3465 of these... I would go for the people with smaller #s, as they
will probably want to get them off the shelf and out of inventory...

a bunch of people here on the group may want to get together ahead of
time to create a single total order, so you can meet a minimum, then
one person can order and cross-ship to everyone else....

what you do-
you may have to register, then do a rfq- or if they have a phone #
give them a call.

you want a 40 pin dip configuration, not the plcc (unless you wanna
buy a converter, too).... don't go that route if you don't have to!

call / email to determine if there is a minimum qty / price. Then
meet that by either getting a couple people together, or (like in my
case) buy a couple of chips....

It IS possible to get them new. In my case, the distributor had a $25
min. so I bought 3 chips at the time....all gone now.

Why de-solder one off some old mac board and risk damaging the chip,
if you can get one to just plug in brand new?

The biggest thing is don't sound like a dumbo or be an A$$ on the
phone when talking to a distributor. FYI - my chips were about $8.50
each.
Keep in mind that to get the scsi working on your emax- is it worth a
few $$$ to you? For me it was....

If you call-
1) Just ask, "Do you have a minimum order requirement?" If so, what
is the minimum? If it is too high, say thank you and move on....

2) Ask for availability of the item: " I am looking for an 5380 or
53C80 SCSI controller chip in the 40-pin dip configuration. I saw on
your website that you might have that available or be able to source
that for me?

That is how I did it. It only took me 2 tries- first person said we
only do OEM, min 1000 pieces. So I called the next number and they
had only a few chips. They were more than happy to sell them.

Hope this advice helps someone!
