Re: [emax] Emax 2 question (or, help me, my Emax II died!!)

Check all the IC's are correctly seated - iirc the main CPU is in a big
square socket, and can pop out along one edge if the poor old beast is
roughly handled. The high pitched whining noise sounds very like a power
supply fault though. Again, rough handling can crack the ferrite cores used
in the switch-mode power supply transformers. They're the dark grey glassy
looking bits. Be *extremely* careful when poking around at the power
supply - switch mode psu's work by rectifying and smoothing incoming mains
to get a DC supply of up to 350v! The smoothing capacitors can stay charged
for ages, and it's possible to get a shock off them hours later. Like I
just said, be very very careful - trust me on this, I know!!

Spares are really hard to get for these now. You may be able to scavenge a
working PSU from an otherwise dead one, you might not. The voltages it
supplies aren't really that unusual, in fact it think it's just 5v, +12v
and -12v. If this is the case, almost any PC power supply can be hacked up
to fit, with the added bonus that it will power as many internal SCSI drives
as you can fit!

Hope this helps,
  Gordon JC Pearce
