Emax 2 Memory PAL files posted to the group.

2016-01-19 by Ted Summers

I know this is a long time coming, as I mentioned this months ago… but here we are.

First I would like to thank:

Steve Klein - who through his persistence acquired these original binary files from Emu Systems
They may not be a complete set, but it’s possible someone may be able to use them to increase their memory so I am posting.

Please note that some odd memory combos the ICs may not be there- but hopefully the most common combos are here.

Frank Klein - who made an attempt to convert one of the files by hand- but upon review it would have been no good, thanks for his effort though.

I found several things- jedutil wouldn’t convert them, I had to keep searching until I found a version of jedutil which worked.
When I got a program that actually gave me more info why it wouldn’t convert, there was missing device specific information in the original binary due to proprietary format.
Fortunately, since I had the Emax 1 SCSI PAL binaries (which had the same issue, way back when- but someone I know had converted them for me at the time - I didn’t know how he did it, so I had to learn how myself), I was able to figure out this critical information.
I was able to modify the files and VOILA!!! - conversion of files by utility is successful!

The PAL-JED files are used to program PAL16R4.
Most common (read inexpensive) programmers today are not going to program PAL ICs (my $1100 one does)…. though many will program GAL ICs.

So I went on to attempt to convert to GAL for you folks.
I had to find a working conversion program to change them as originally PAL2GAL didn’t work… again it wanted some device information that was missing- but I didn’t know what the program was looking for, and it sure as hell wasn’t documented….

Eventually I found a different program out on the web that let me specify the source and destination devices… once I could do that, as I know that info- then I was able to create GAL compatible files.

These GAL-JED files assume you will be programming a Lattice Semiconductor GAL16V8 IC.
I have programmed the SCSI TIM PAL into a GAL and tested successfully (in case I ever can’t get the original equipment PALs), so these GAL files SHOULD work….

I cannot confirm the files will work with any other devices, though they might.

DISCLAIMER:
I am not responsible for the use / misuse, or any damage to a unit where these files were programmed to an IC and the IC installed.

Use these files purely at your own risk.

Good Luck with the files….

Regards,
Ted

PS- I don’t plan to start selling the ICs which is why I posted them to the group. I don’t have an easy way to completely test them. However, the files were made from Emu Binaries, it’s not a “reverse engineer” or “hack", it is a matter of proper conversion of proprietary-formatted files.
