Yeah, I doubt they ever planned for that.
However, since the 3 screwy drives also fail to boot and fail to get recognized in a regular HD Emax (i.e. not se upgraded) as well as in an Emax that was purchased as an SE new from the factory, that perhaps the eeprom isn't the issue? Or could the bad eeprom have contributed in some way to the botched formatting?
