Question on patterns

Question on patterns

2006-02-06 by Tarekith

I think I'm not understanding something about the MD. I thought that
in Extended mode, each Kit had an associated Pattern, and that saving
the Kit, saved the Pattern. However, when I load a new Kit, and clear
it's Pattern, it always erases the saved Pattern for the previous Kit
too.

What am I missing?

you've got it backwards. in extended mode the pattern holds its
associated
kit, not vice versa. and patterns are always saved as you work on them.
there is no dedicated save function for a pattern. so when you make a
change, you're *really* making it. there is no undo. kits, however,
need to
be saved if you make changes to them. when you load a kit to a pattern
in extended mode, it will always load that kit every time you play the
pattern. unless you revert to basic mode, in which case it will simply
play whatever the current kit is.

Thanks man, realized late last night this was probably my issue, makes
sense. I couldn't figure out why I kept losing all my programmed patterns,
doh!

Now in Song Mode, since each Song step can call a new Pattern, does that
mean that each song step reloads the kit saved with that Pattern? Unless
the Kit is the same as the previous Pattern? What if I have a Pattern in
Song Mode that a lot of parameter locks, with the next Pattern cancel any
changes to the kit the parameter locks made, even if it's the same kit?

Just want to make sure I have my head around this relationship properly
before I start diving in and doing serious work again, already lost a lot of
music (though I gained a ton of fun).

no. just like when you change patterns in normal mode, the kit
is only reloaded if the kit is different. two patterns with the same
kit when played in succession will not reload the kit. and just like
if you play a pattern over and over again and it has locks, the locks
don't affect the kit's state. they only effect the step that they're
set on
and don't actually change any of the kit's settings as you see them
(and actually they're not sent out via MIDI either).

so if you have something setup in song mode with the same kit
and several patterns going, the locks will still effect
everything that they always did and you can also change
the kit's parameters as the song plays. (something that you can't
do in vastly inferior seq's like the XBase09!)

Thanks man, that clears up a lot.
