  Personally, signal degredation isn't the issue with RCA.

  In my experience, RCA connections are simply not reliable.  I often 
find that I have to "jiggle" the connectors a bit, as they start 
losing signal (even when they've been TOTALLY untouched for weeks).  
They also tend to disconnect much more easily than 1/4" without very 
much pressure applied (e.g. if I move a component to look at 
something, the RCA cable is much more likely to pop out than a 1/4" 
cable -- definitely a major consideration in a live situation)
