Other modules

2011-04-12 by infraxpert

Hi,

I asked for suggestions on a LFO for my pretty basic synthesizer.com.
I had some very good answers and found lots of new stuff.

So I dare again with a new question:

What module/modules would be a fantastic extension to my basic synthesizer.com setup.

Kind Regards
John

I'd have to say a phasor of some sort.

I would go for VCFs. There are many available, depending on how far
you're willing to go to with making panels (many are paneled in MOTM
format).

Two questions (maybe I missed this info before):

1. What do you presently have?
2. Where do you - figuratively speaking - want to go?

The first one is easy to answer. The second one is more of a think piece. If you want a great mass of sound then priorities might be different from extensive modulation for self-generating patches. If you love Berlin school music you'll select modules differently from those you'd use to emulate of Aphex Twin tracks.

The rest of the offerings on the LFO manufacturers' websites are worthy of consideration, as are those at stgsoundlabs and Moon modular. And COTK also, if you are feeling brave. Which you should be salivating over kind of depends on what you want to do with your system.

The Megaohm LPG and upcoming VCEG look great to me, and the Moon VCEG and 563 were among my personal favorite third party additions, but there are *lots* of other goodies to consider, too.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks evryboby for your answers.

My setup is all dotcom right now:
3 VCO+aid, 8ch mixer, ringmod, S&H, distributor, 3 EG, both VCF's+mixer, Rectifier and 2 VCA, Signal processor and mults.

I am looking for something that gives more sonic possibilities but it is very hard to find out what possibilities or "sounds" the different options offer.

I am thinking of building a box with MOTM power supply so I can use both standards but then I found a new standard with nice moog 900 cloned modules so maybe I need 3 different boxes to be able to get new exiting options. How do you handle that?

Anybody tried mos-lab modules: http://www.mos-lab.com/

I really appreciate all your help.

Kind Regards
John

COTK looks really interesting.
Why do I have to be brave to use those modules?

Re: [dotcomformat] Re: Other modules

2011-04-13 by Brian Whittington

They have a mixed record of being able to deliver what they promise. No outright thievery, just some epic delays and spotty communication.

Regarding Mos-lab, I think they are powered by +/- 12v and a bus board type power connection. There are a couple of ways to integrate these other formats in your case, but the simplest might be just adding a 12v power supply. I'd type more detail about that if I weren't on my phone right now. It's possible that the modules you want can use 15v and all you would need to do is add a bus board or wire your own connectors to the Dotcom power harness. It might be worth asking about that.

Cheers,
Brian

Might I recommend an STG Soundlabs Wave Folder? Very good for waveshaping and distortion and it only takes up one space.

STG also does a pair of compact (1U) filters: the Post-Lawsuit Lowpass (essentially an ARP Odyssey Blackface filter) and the Sea Devils Filter (based on the VCS3 topology - it has VC over resonance).

+1 on everything Brian (and Christopher) said.

I highly recommend you check out http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/index.php
in particular the 5U forum! (that's where all the cool kids hang out! ;-)
Lots of info and opinions on COTK, Mos-Lab and others.

I personally own 9 COTK modules and 1 Mos-Lab module.
