computer control

Hi all,

I know it is possible to send and receive midi files from a computer 
but can a computer be used to access the settings that are usually 
accessed by the disklavier's control unit?

I ask that as I have poor sight and I use a pc with a screenreader 
and would like to know if it is possible to configure a disklavier in 
this way?

Good evening, everyone.

Regrettably, Keith, this is not possible. However, you could:

--Set up MIDI In and Out defaults appropriately on the Disklavier

--Use a MIDI sequencing program on your computer to make your recordings

--Store your recordings on your computer

--Use your MIDI sequencer or a MIDI jukebox program to play your MIDI  
recordings

In this scenario, you would not have to touch the controls on your  
Disklavier once things were set up properly, except, perhaps, to play  
a floppy disk or a CD in the Disklavier's control unit.

    Does the Disklavier absolutely for sure not support SysEx messages 
which might be used for this purpose? I'd be surprised if Yamaha 
doesn't have some kind programatic interface to the controller -- if 
only for their own internal development and test purposes?

Good afternoon, everyone.

I have checked on this with Yamaha Piano Service personnel who have  
communicated directly with the engineers in Japan. The reply is No.

Interestingly, the Disklavier Pro 2000 (a concept piano, about 6 of  
which were sold in the US) had a Windows computer underneath, and  
that computer communicated with the control unit via the To Host port  
(using a serial cable). The control unit did have a modified Mark  
IIXG operating system that accepted certain SysEx messages from the  
computer. However, it was not a comprehensive set of commands and  
those commands do not work in any other control unit.
