How to improve highlight detail in soft proof?

How to improve highlight detail in soft proof?

2008-12-13 by prof_mgt551

Using SpyderrPrint v 3.5b9 I created a profile of Museo Portfolio Rag
printed on my Epson 3800 using the high quality target plus gray.

After tweaking the shadow detail slider to open up the shadows in the
print plus adjusting the reference black to improve the soft proofing
in Photoshop, I am happy with the print quality the new profile provides.

Soft proofing in Photoshop looks good except that the soft proof clips
the highlights. The actual print has nice highlight gradation, but the
soft proof clips a couple of steps off the scale. In the soft proof,
step 250 is the last step to show separation from pure white. On the
print, step 252 is the last step to show separation from pure white,
so the soft proof clips a couple of steps. I am not sure how to
correct the soft proof so that it shows the the actual print's fuller
highlight detail.

Any suggestions on how to tweak the soft proof highlight detail? I am
using the Printer Evaluation Image available at outbackprint.com.

I'd start by adjusting the L* value for Ref White when building the
profile. Sounds like one point should about do it. Photoshop has some
issues with softproofing whites, so it may not be possible to get it
perfect.

Re: How to improve highlight detail in soft proof?

Thanks for your prompt response. I tried different L values for Ref
White and rebuilt the profiles. This changes the soft proof's pure
white value, but doesn't reveal much more detail (if any). I notice my
other profile soft proofs have the same issue.

It is nice that SpyderPrint lets you make these L value adjustments
for the Ref White and Black, quickly generate a new profile and then
immediately check the soft proof in Photoshop.

One additional question: where does SpyderPrint keep the data files? I
would like to back these up.

Thanks for your help

You can open the XML file folder from the menu; once you have it open,
you will be able to copy it's contents to any location you like. My
reason for answering in this indirect manner is that the location has
changed with more recent versions, and varies with platform as well.

Check the softproof in SpyderProof using the lower rightmost image.
Check this against the same image in Photoshop, and tell me if our
highlight proofing is better than Photoshop's.

CD - I saw that info in the help section. A little enlightenment on the
"Certification" and "Recalibration" sections would be appreciated,
especially with regard to the frequency. Given that each of them can be set
from one hour to six months it would help to understand exactly what is
being done within the program. Also, the LUT lookup can be set from one
minute to 60 minutes - what is the advantage/disadvantage of a
longer/shorter setting? I do compliment you on the improvements in the
utility and appreciate your patience with me. Thanks.

The improvements were definately more difficult than the patience; that part was easy.

As for the three functions, and their variables:

Certification is most likely to see use in larger studios and other companies. Tighter specs simply mean that the standards for CheckCAL and ReCAL are more stringent, and the Spyder icon will display as out of standards (slashed) sooner, than if a more liberal value had been chosen. I don't anticipate many individual users choosing this option.

ReCAL will nag you to recalibrate sooner, if a shorter timeframe is chosen, we've had options for this for years. Once a month is reasonable for many users, but some feel that weekly is the longest they are willing to go.

LUT checking is only an issue if you have things going on that might interfere. For most users once an hour is fine (certainly better then only at startup, as has traditionally been the case); especially on the Mac. But if you aren't doing things where the check competes for cycles, there is no reason to lower this setting.

Overall, I'd say its mostly those of an engineering mindset that will worry much about any of these settings, unless there is a specific issue that effects them. They are added for the special cases, with the assumption that most users will ignore them and leave them at defaults.

The newsletter does not provide the information we need about the
Spyder3 Utility. The newsletter describes what the tabs are - but
that "information" is clear once you luanch the utility. (I suppose
if you are wondering if you should install the newest version - no
longer 3.06, now 3.07 - the newsletter tidbit is interesting.) What
we need is more detailed information, such as explain how often and
why we need to "Load Video Card LUT". Or explain the
benefit/necessity of Certification. Does Certification ad a process
or service to Vista/XP that could cause a conflict?
I have sent email to Tech Support, have not received answers. Whoever
is writing the software must know - would help us if a document was
put on your website explaining such matters.
