New Monitor Calibration Questions

New Monitor Calibration Questions

2008-09-25 by Randy Hill

I just got a Dell 2408WFP Ultrasharp LCD monitor.
It's real bright compared to my old (4 years) Samsung 213T.
I have several questions.
What monitor settings should I use from its menu?
A friend who has an Ultrasharp has his Brightness turn all the way down to Zero.
When I do this my prints look very close to what the monitor displays. If I set it to 50% brightness the image on the monitor looks much brighter the colors are not the same.
The next question relates to the 'Preset Modes' on the monitor.
The choices are:
Desktop
Multimedia
Game
sRGB
Warm
Cool
Custom.
Under Custon the RGB values are all set to 100 FWIW.
Which mode do I use?
I'm using a Spyder with OptiCal v3.7

That would be the Spyder1; I wouldn't recommend that (or any product from that era) for a new display. You will find that Spyder3Elite will walk you through the process of determining your ambient light level, and recommending a display brightness (white luminance actually) that is appropriate to that; if your space is dim, your backlight control may barely have enough range to dim the display enough to balance.
