Is it ok to ask questions about PFP2.0 here so that others can also

Not the general idea with beta testing, but this is so close to the end of the process that it doesn't really matter...

what's the effect of the extended grey/gray(?) patches on the color
profiles? does it make for more details and graduations in the
gray/black areas?

Yes, it does. Think of one of those metal tube apple corers. When you add the data from the grays and near grays in the Extended Grays target, it replaces a thinly sampled core of gray data with a much more extensively sampled core. So even for color prints, there is more gray, near gray, black near black, white, near white data.

in PFP2.0, I don't understand the 'Open Profile' function. WHen i
activate it, i get to choose from a range of my existing profile but
i then get windows xP then asks me to choose a software/application
to use the profile - which of course stops me from using it further.

I'll let Dave Miller get back to you on that; certainly having Windows stomp on things in the middle of the process is not the intent.
