Wierd Midi Mono Anomoly

Wierd Midi Mono Anomoly

2004-12-30 by funkjunke

I started up my gear as usual today to start sequencing, and found
that my Polaris was triggering in Mono mode only...after numerous
tests and filtering, I've hit a wall.

To sum it up, here is the minimal setup I scaled down to to try and
find the bug, 1 Oxygen 8 midi control keyboard going out to a Motu
Micro Express, which in turn runs out to the Polaris. I thought
perhaps SOMEHOW the Polaris was recieveing a Mono Mode ON command, but
it is indeed NOT. I got so far as to filter every single midi message
out that was going to the Polaris except for Note On, and it still
automatically goes into some sort of mono mode. The wierder bit is
that if I play the Polaris' local keys, it plays in full beautiful
polyphony, but as soon as I trigger it externally it goes right into
this mono mode, even from it's local keys after that. I can't get it
back to polyphonic without resetting it, and then once I externally
trigger it again, it's back to Mono. WTF?!

If anyone has ANY ideas or suggestions PLEASE let me know...the
Polaris is THE polyphonic cornerstone of my setup (along with an ATC-1
for my mono cornerstone), without it I'm up shits creek for a long
long time due to utter lack of financial support....and it figures
this happens when I'm right in the middle of recording a final demo album!

Thanks,
Byron

That sounds strange-- perhaps you scrambled your interface settings
and only have 1 voice enabled for remote control? Do you have the
manual?
LF-cassette,9 is MIDI omni mode (on to ignore midi channel#s)
LF-cassette,10 is MIDI mono mode (you want this off!)

not sure, but... are you using glide? iirc, when glide is set to a
non-zero value, and you press the sustain pedal (which engages the
glide), then you go to mono mode. it's been a while since i had my
polaris though. shouldn't happen with the filtering though... it's CC64,
not a note on.

in combination with this... i would check your footpedal jacks. maybe
one of them is dirty or something. the footpedal also triggers sustain
on/off.

or maybe there's some sort of midi loop... one thing about the polaris,
is that if you send it 6 note ons for the same note, it will trigger it
on all 6 voices, might sound mono. Doesn't explain the mono on the local
keyboard though. that's the weirdest part.

just some ideas to try.

Thanks guys, as it turns out, the last track I did I had set a
constant sustain and glide on the Polaris in Cubase for a bending
arpeggio, I didn't realize that this would set the LF, C-10 to an ON
position that would be retained when the unit was powered down
(nothing else is retained in terms of global button settings when I
power it down....). So, that WAS indeed the problem doh! I had no clue
even, since it WOULD play in poly mode when first turned on!
Whew...dilemma solved in the nick of time!
Thanks mates,
Byron
