What kind of output module for my CGS system?

What kind of output module for my CGS system?

2011-04-16 by acousmatique

For quite a long time, I would have just a few circuits on the bench and play them through my old PA amp. But now that I have a lot of nice modules getting completed, and planning racks of them to play... how do I go from dozens of interesting signals to something like a stereo output? Like some kind of mixer/ headphone amplifier thing? Since I work nights a headphone output of some kind is a must.

Funny that with thinking about synths and audio processing for about ten years that I have neglected to consider this bit. What do you folks recommend? I would like to hear about how people handle this.

Something like the resistive dividers in the CGS60 would do the job of
dropping the signal down to line level for feeding into a hi-fi amp or
mixer. That is pretty much what I do.

I built a couple of matrix mixers for output tasks. You can download my
schematics.

http://pugix.com/synth/dual-mixer/

A couple of CGS04 DC mixers would work for these.

I made one of the mixers cut the output by half, and audio taper pots do
a good job of managing the individual levels.

I designed a module as my final output module. It's a 3 input mixer with spring reverb and an A-440 reference oscillator. I figured this would allow me to mix everything together, and since it was the last stage, would enable me to "hear" my reference oscillator for tuning. I use the clip indicator all the time. I added a final attenuator so I could drive my power amp directly (although now I don't).
http://modularsynthesis.com/modules/DJB-002/djb002.htm

After that, I built another module for my headphone amp, but I wanted to combine other functions in the same module, so I added my master power switch and also a cable tester for opens/shorts/resistance.
http://modularsynthesis.com/modules/DJB-006/djb006.htm

Eventually, I decided I wanted stereo and a foot volume pedal so I built a dual VCA with amp power control and AC coupling.

I like the stereo imaging that the YUSynth FFB offers so I tend to run that between the DJB-002 Mixer and the DJB-014 Output interface. I have sample of the stereo imaging on the FFB page.

I have two Oakley Equinox phaser and I modified them so I can run them off of a single LFO. I sometimes patch this in after the FFB.

Then to complete it, I use a Carver PM-600 power amp driving JBL speakers. I like the older Carver PM series since they are convection cooled. That's what I do.

I plug my modular straight into my A&H Zed24 desk. It handles modular levels very well so there's no need for me to attenuate them.

Some food for thought here, certainly!

My only mixer now is an inherited Mackie 1202 VLZ, it has problems and I try to avoid using it. Also I imagine that my modular setup would be more portable and integrated if I build a small mixer into the system. Also thinking about a four-channel playback system for the room. Didn't know about Yves' module, that's a nice approach.

Thank you for relating these ideas and experiences. I still don't know quite what to do but this gives me more to consider.

Stooge Industries Dual ASR panel

For putting two CGS Analogue Shift Registers in a 1U module.

Pre-drilled for your convenience.

http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs34_asr.html

Includes both CGS ASR PCB's absolutely free!

$30 plus shipping from U.S.

Also, if anyone is interested, I'm also selling my MOTM-format Blacet
Time Machine, but it seemed a bit off-topic to post here.
