a good starter

as this is my first post i want say hi to all and thanks for existing.
im pretty new to the modular thing, but am getting my soldering skills together while restoring some older modules and putting a system together with modules from various companies.
could anyone suggest a board to start out with that would be good for a noob (easy to understand, get all the parts, put together)?
also, one of the reasons i got into modular world was the lure of the matrix mixer, but i see those boards arent currently being made. any word on when another batch might get made or where else i could get one?
