In the schematic: caps are unpolarized. 1uF can be found in ceramic through hole. Ceramic are unpolarized. Depending on the orientation of the caps and the polarity of your input signal, using a polarized might work. A working configuration is using a positive only input signal with a polarized cap. The + leg must be connected to the wiper of the pot in this case.
I you used a polarized cap in the wrong direct it may be damaged. Electrolytic caps can leak or explode when plugged in the wrong direction, so beware. An unpolarized cap will work with any input signal and you don't have to worry on its orientation.
