Sage advice Graham, I appreciate it. I have all the mod holes drilled and have been documenting my work. It'll be a miracle if nothing major goes wrong, but here's to luck :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Meredith" <gmeredith1@...> To: casiocollectors@yahoogroups.com.au Sent: Thursday, April 11, 2013 12:04:16 AM Subject: Re: [casiocollectors] Re: RZ-1 Bend points? Hi Kev, I personally would remove the old chips first - don't solder the new ones in with the old ones in place. It creates all sorts of interferences, I've tried it before with my chip stacking expiriments. You could cut the legs off and solder to the nubs but make sure there's clearance for the chip if it's sandwiched between boards, or with the casing - remember that the sockets will double the height compared to the old chips. I would remove the chips and legs be done with them altogether - cut the legs, then the nubs are easy to remove with the board out. You'll have to get to the back of the board to hook up different Vcc connections and others from the circuit tracks anyway, so you may as well unsolder the cut nibs while you're there and clean up the socket holes. It feels so much nicer with a clean board :D PS don't do both mods at the same time - only do one first, ie the ROM mod, then the other - you'll have a headache trying to troubleshoot it if somethings wrong. So only cut out one set of chips first - leave the others once the first mod is working well. Hey Graham do you have any advice for swapping the DIP's? I'm ready to start but I'm not sure if I should solder wires to the old intact DIP pins to got to my ZIF sockets or if I should just cut out the old IC's and solder to just the left-over pin nubs. If I leave the old DIP's in place do you know if I only need to cut the VCC and CE pins to the old DIP's or should I just cut all the pins and be done with it? This will be for both the ROM and RAM chips. If I was a glutton for punishment I'd remove the bottom board and desolder the old chips but forget that. Thanks, Kev
