few question for A.Live users

few question for A.Live users

2008-12-10 by peter_resolent

In Mackie Mode...

1.) Does anyone have a template image of what each button/knobs do? I
have a hard time understanding the image of the BCManager screen shot.

2.) Is there a way to cancel a clip when I accidently hit
the "Play Clip" button?

3.) I have also have noticed that when i play around with the BCR in
mackie mode, the assigned functions, such as mute, pan, volume control
switched from the first channel or row of clips (?) to like #9. Did I
hit a button that shifts everything?

4.) I looked through the preset list in the database, but noticed there
aren't anything for Ableton Live except for the Mackie mode. Is there a
website with a list of other presets for Live???

5.) If anyone has a preset where the very top row knobs act as cursers
to move up & down in the individual row (1-8) while pushing down on the
knobs plays the clip, that would be awesome to share.

I'm excited to get started with this for live shows. I apologize if I'm
asking real simple questions, but I am new to this, and I am encouraged
to learn! thank you!

sincerely,

-pete

Yes - well you can use the print strips, well, I forget what the
function is called... in BCManager, I am not on a computer with that
on it, but if you are looking at bcmanager and viewing the layout you
can print strips to put on the bcr.

I don't know... I will have to experiment with that.

Yes you hit the bank button, or turned the bank knob, depending on
which mackie preset you are using. All, well most, of the functions
work in groups of 8. So 1-8, bank down 9-16 etc.

There are other presets, however, most ppl end up abandoning them, due
to the reasons I stated in a previous post about mackie mode, I don't
recall the thread but it was about 2 weeks ago.

For you use, you probably will want to roll your own. Your preset
idea sounds interesting, and it could be a hybrid of the mackie
preset. My mackie preset has cursors up down on a knob already, just
not the top knob, I can imagine, you would still need a few buttons to
do it. Hmm... maybe not, maybe when you turn the knob it will ch
select as well as cursor up down. Then button push to fire the
selected clip...
So you would need cursor up down on each top knob AND each knob would
have to send out a custom output that selected the track and moved the
up down when you turn it, then the clip fire(zoom I think is mackie
command). I think cntl (zoom),would stop a playing clip fire.
That might solve that issue as well.

Ok - I will help get you started.
First make sure you have BCmanager running on your machine.
Download my mackie preset, the most recent, is 4.1 I believe. And read
the manual so you know what it can do and play with it a bit.

I can imagine, doing away with say the record arm buttons on the
mackie preset that would make space for this function, and you would
still have all the other stuff from mackie.
Well, some stuff would have to move around...

I will play with this a bit today and upload something... a least a start.

Ok - after about 20 mins I have a prototype for trial.
It will, still do mackie mode.
When you press arm on the Encoder groups -
the upper pots will cursor up/down and fire with push button.
I also have it automatically selecting the ch when you turn the knob.
It will need some tweaking... I will post it up in about an hour or so.

Re: few question for A.Live users

Cool, it is coming along.
I have some comments...
This will take away the arm buttons. So you would have to use the
keyboard or mouse to select tracks to arm to record.
Also - it would not give access to faders, unless we move them or
unless flip is activated.
Options -

1. I could move the faders to the 2nd row of knobs.
So there is still volume control or tracks when using the cursor stuff.
Vpots would replace the top row except for the Arm set.
Hmm... the more I think about this the more I like it.
Other suggestions...

Re: few question for A.Live users

Why not, if you are using bcmanager, you can copy the rotary encoder
custom controls from the bcr preset and paste them to the rotary
encoders on the bcf preset. Then copy the clip fire commands from the
rotary encoder push buttons to that location on the bcf.

I think I remember Mark making that possible a version ago.

glad you guys think its a great idea to have the top knobs only
function as up/down cursers for individual rows... Before buying the
BCR, I imagined that the top 8 knobs would control
each row, haha but i didnt know you had to set everything up...

Thank you for answering my questions, I appreciate it very much. Kip
if you can name that preset to the "PunkyFresh Preset" I would
appreciate it so much that i will put your name in our thank you
notes for our album.

hahaha....
thanks anyway!

sincerely,

-Pete
