SH101 meets P3

SH101 meets P3

2011-07-14 by sunilsolanki@rogers.com

Hi there,

I have just acquired a gorgeous grey SH-101 and the classic Boss DR-55
drum machine.
These are the first bits of analog I have ever used, so be nice! Sorry if my questions seem stupid...

I would like to sync them along with 3 MIDI synths and don't know how.

The Roland has CV in/out and the Boss has 2 types of trigger out (5v and 4 v if i remember the manual correctly).

How would I sync these to the P3? the cabling seems to be a mess!

Thanks...

Any help with this Colin/guys/gals???

Thanks!

You could always buy my Kenton Pro2000 MIDI/CV convertor for the SH-101,
that's what I used for years until I got Cirklon. Or look for something
cheaper like a Pro Solo. Been yonks since I had a DR-55 so can't
remember if that will sync, sorry.

Hi,

Do you just want to sync them (i.e. use their internal sequencer only) ?
The DR55 has a 4 ppqn clock (which just means one-pulse-per-step), rather
than DIN sync.
I believe the 101 sequencer can be clocked with gate pulses (?).
If your P3 has the DIN sync output rather than MIDI clock, you could use a
simple clock divider circuit, to generate a pulse to trigger both.
You'd need to divide the DIN CLOCK rate by 6 to get 16th notes.
This sort of circuit could be built with a couple of CMOS ICs.

If you want full MIDI control of the 101, you need some sort of MIDI to CV
convertor.
With added inputs for filter CV and such, this can be a lot more fun than
sticking to the internal sequencer.

Cheers,
Colin

Hello Colin,

Most of what you said is totally over my head... Sorry- I'm not very technical at all!

My P3 has the DIN sync. I have never used/owned analog hardware before and to be honest have no idea what CV is (I know it means Controlled Voltage- but my knowledge ends there!)

You said:

I have absolutely no idea what a clock divider is or what CMOS is...I know that "building a circuit" is something I would have NO clue about...

I just wanted to
1)sync my sh101 with the boss DR55 like i've seen the sync done with the 101 and the 808.
2)control the Sh101 with the P3 and create more interesting patterns than the original sequencer allows for...

Thanks,

Sunil.

In that case, you need to get a MIDI to CV convertor.
A two-channel unit would let you use gates to trigger the sequencers in the
101 and DR55.
Or you could use CV and gate to control the 101, and sequence it directly
from your P3.
Never having owned a commercial MIDI to CV convertor, I can't really
recommend a suitable one, but I'm sure there must be someone around here who
can.

Cheers,
Colin
